shifting difficulty
02/26/21 6:10 AM

too fat(300lb)+severe arthritis+ getting old = bad knee
total knee replacement surgery complications + MRSA infection (look it up) = 2 more surgeries
just because after 6 months I can barely walk, doesn't mean I cant ride.
my left leg is still a bit swollen with bulky bandages resulting in limited mobility and movement
having size 16 boot I am finding it hard to shift resulting in missed shifts
mostly due to not being able to get toe of boot under shift lever when upshifting

is there a different part or lever that might help??
is there a reasonable way to modify or extend lever to give boot a little more lever to grab?
once I recover fully I'll be OK, but in the meantime??

the alternative is getting a Harley with heel to toe floorboard shifter Nope
ideas?
thanks
TIB

PS getting old sucks

The shift rod is splined. Pull the shift lever and rotate it up a spline or two to give you more clearance. Certainty worth a try before buying a Fat Boy Harley

I have seen adjustable length gear shift pedals but I can't find any for a ZX-14. If turning the stock pedal a couple splines doesn't do the trick, you could buy a used one off of Ebay and chop and weld the gear shift pedal. LightTech rearsets have an adjustable length pedals. You might want to consider switching to GP shift pattern too.

I like the elec shifter idea. That would fix my problem. Not likely My piggy bank has a thousand bucks inside. I took the lever off to rotate up a few splines. while off, I found out a 5/8" deep socket will fit over the toe piece. The rubber end holds it snug. If it falls off, I'm only out the cost of a socket.

ROOK? What is a "GP shift pattern"?

Amazing goop glue aka 6000 with a letter next to it I don't recall, but a little dab saves the socket. Shit, you can make something off the shifter and that glue being applied.

Gp shift is 1 up, the rest down. Straights you just tap the lever. You're sitting up and it's easier to upshift when upright, where leaned over, you don't want the foot under the lever, and cause a downshift???... the foot gets caught under, and all those lean angles with a standard shift... no way.

What Hub said. There's a couple threads on here about converting to GP shift pattern. You need reaersets to achieve that. You just turn the shift knuckle so it points downward. There were clearance problems with the lower fairing and the side stand spring on the Gen1. Some owners welded the peg to the back of the side stand a/o trimmed a little notch out of the fairing. Vortex or Sato used to make a GP shift pedal for their rearsets. I can't find that product anymore.

Now, now Cruderudy. I happen to have a Harley Fatboy and a ZX14R. They go nicely together. It's like having more than one pair of pants...

Although motorcycles have broken my bones, they have greatly improved my quality of life. A fair trade...
