Error Code 24 Help
09/10/18 1:10 PM

I've been at Deals Gap for a couple days. I was riding on the Dragon today (it was slightly damp but I rode 250 miles in the pouring rain to get here) and the TC light comes on.
Then within moments the thing cuts power, check engine and another light comes on and it goes into a friggin limp mode. At some point I was able to change the TC setting from #1 where I always have it to the #2 setting. I turned the bike off.
Upon restart, the bike is running fine, it seams. However, all the lights and locked up screen are still flashing. There is the KTRAC shit across the bottom of the dash, and the ODO, and both trip meters are frozen. And the speedo quit as well.
I unplugged all the small fuses and put them back and unplugged the negative battery terminal and plugged it back in.
No change.
I tried to search this to no avail. Google came up with the manual that says it is a speed sensor..??

I have a little over 15k miles
Any ideas??

Thanks,
ominousone

experienced similar symptoms some moons ago, after washing the bike thoroughly
this could relate to your ride in the pouring rain

turned out to be a mouse attack on a bunch of main harness cables...
some cables got their insulation stripped off, and the water did the rest

Let it ride. Seems the R series has a multi keyfob turning until the code clears. My experience has been about 14 to 20 fobs before it would clear. As long as it runs, the key cycling is going to clear it eventually.

Thanks for getting back to me guys. The Kawy dealer opens at 9:00, so I'll stop over there to see if there is something they can do real quick. I just don't too spend what looks to be a perfect day of riding, at the dealer.
Or, I'm hoping the "key cycles" might work.

Every time I wash my bike with heavy amounts of water hose application I get something similar. My speedometer quits working and my screen flashes the TC indicator until everything dries out. It’s done this since it was brand new. I bet if you let everything dry out it will return to normal.

hey GM, my water hose sprayer is on soft shower mode all the time
none of that rock hard Karcher water beam...

my issue was definitely due to mice munching on the harness cables insulation
interestingly enough, have spoken to the Kawi main distributor here...

they say the mice issue is something they have encountered on other zx14r's
perhaps because of a different harness wrapping material attracting the rodents?

Well, the dealer worked with Kawasaki and tried a few different things. The end prognosis is the ECU. That will be overnighted from the Kentucky warehouse and I'll be back in business tomorrow. In the meantime, I rented a FZ6R and still having a great time with my 2 brothers and 84 year old dad on the Dragon, Cherohala, Moonshiner 28 and much more.

Ride safe,

Did your ECU get rain soaked? What's odd about these bikes(well,I guess almost all bikes)is one glitch isn't always related to something that's happening.Weird your ecu would fail.At the same time.

That is odd. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the ECU water resistant? Grn is correct...pure coincidence.

Seems like typical dealer tactics - not sure what’s wrong so through an expensive part at it

Unless you've really modified the area, sure seems like the ECU is protected by water pretty darn well, plus the ECU itself is encased in whatever water proofing so water should not be getting in it. Hopefully the dealer isn't just spending your money for you.

Sucks it happened on your trip, too. Anyway, glad you have an alternate ride, good luck with the repair ... oh! and watch out for hurricanes!

Okay...they want to put a new ECU in there.Fer God sakes KEEP the other one.My guess there's nothing wrong with it.UNLESS...maybe they dropped it checking it?IDK.But make sure they give it to you. It's yours.

I should know in a few hours if the ECU is the culprit. I will try to keep the original. Thankfully it is under warranty. And yes, I do kind it wierd that the ECU would take a shit.

Speaking of Hurricanes, my youngest brother, 47 years old, bought my 88 600 Hurc about 19 years ago and it ran pretty even with the FZ6 I'm renting. He was stoked. He loves talking about the old Ad campaign that even Ninjas are afraid of Hurricanes.

29 = ECU Error
24 = Rear wheel speed sensor.

Change ECU for a c24?

2 ECU's = 2 sets of ignition keys
keep these 2 key sets away from eachother, to avoid mutual magnetic code interferences

The new ECU showed up and guess what? Not the cure. So the mxc back on with Kawasaki who asked what mods and changes on the bike. Slip-ons, and 1 tooth down on rear. They said that the spkt is the problem. I had to leave the bike in Alcoa Good Times (who were pretty good to us). We had to be back in Chicago last night and back home in the Twin Cities, MN today. They will put on a stock spkt and see if that's the culprit. If it is, I may be on the hook for all the labor, plus shipping back home.
Kawasaki claims the gear ratios cannot be changed for any with KTRAC. Has anyone experienced any issues with gearing changes on the KTRAC bikes??

Oh my gosh, I forgot all about that. Yeah, a number of guys posted that changing sprocket sizes has caused problems, can't exactly what problems, but I think stumbling / engine mis-fires, etc maybe in lower gears but not higher ones, can't remember for sure the issues ... but I seem to remember that other guys have changed them with no problems.

Okay...your dash is fooked. So the sprocket is killing it.Sounds about right.I've got a 2013.I've had an 07.I've changed gears in BOTH at different times.Front and back.NEVER did my dash go koo koo from it.OR the bike sputter.Or ANYTHING.I know some guys said their bike acted odd.Okay.Maybe theirs did.But a dash going nutso?Never heard of it.It aint the sprocket...IMO.It got water up in the wiring or something. That's what I think.Code 24...sounds like a wet sensor shorting.Or had shorted.Probably okay by now...maybe.I think it's totally possible the dash issue is NOT related to anything other than rain getting in there.Probably two seperate deals going on.

Here...turn KTRC to OFF.Now go ride.See what THAT does.Did they actually call it KTRAC?I only heard of like two people ever say their bike was SPUTTERING with a gearing change...that easily could have been from something else going on that just so happened to coincide with their change.Happens all the time.

When it 1st went into a limp mode I was on TC1 and was able to change to TC 2. Then I could not change or turn off the TC. At this point it ran fine with frozen dash, but for how long?? The dash was frozen ecxept clock and tach. The dealer, who made many calls to Kaay warranty, is gonna put a stock sprocket on the back and see if that cures it. I also have run 200-50 a couple years ago and currently run 190-55 and never had issues.

The fact that the bike worked flawlessly for a time before the problem does seem to indicate it's not sprockets or the tire, so maybe it is GRN's water idea.

"Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the ECU water resistant?"...well,yes,it is water resistant. But he connectors aren't.It'd be rare to have water getting under that cowling.I think something shorted in the meter assembly.Isn't there something in the manual about NOT laying the meter assembly upside down?I know that's not actually this deal here. But it IS very sensitive. It could malfunction with the right situation. Is the speedometer sweeping when you key it on?

The LCD screen is NOT going to go haywire from a sprocket change. The bike MAY stutter or something from the KTRC sensing, but the dash will be fine.
