Scott's steering stabilizer installed with risers.

I got a Scott's steering stabilizer off ebay for 211 shipped for my O6 ZX14. I had to go this route because I have 1.25" risers and so most dampers won't work on that setup.
It was an easy install. I put the bracket on the tank bolt tight and used the bracket as a guide for the drill bit to go into the frame in the right spot and angle. Then tapped the holes with my tap and coconut oil as a cutting agent....don't laugh it works well and is known for being a good cutting agent. I use it to cook with anyway. The install was simple and went fine. I also changed the oil in the damper to 3w synthetic fork oil.

question.
Shouldn't I be able to tell that it is very stiff on the stiffest settings? I really can't tell much of a difference when I turn the knob. I know a lot of people put in higher weight oil but they are usually doing it on stock setups that don't have an adjustment knob.

thanks
Joel

A used dynamic damper ... if it looks ok and doesn't leak probably OK

The stiffness should be noticeable with the front wheel off the ground. In this configuration you can move the bars rapidly and change the damping. They are designed to dampen fast, hard high force loads so just moving the bars or even at normal speeds its not noticable. They are designed to not interfere with normal steering inputs.

I personally would not service a dynamic damper and "try" different weight fluids and I understand the design. I sent my GPR V4 in for service and I think it was like $35. My settings go from 1 nothing to 40 max. Around town I set it at 5, on twisty its 10 and track day it was 20. 40 would be for drag or LSR stuff.

Mine has the effect of focusing or sharpening the steering inputs, feels more stable. Never had to use the intended function on this bike though.

No leaks or excess air that I can feel when turning the plunger before I mounted. As you know, there needs to be a bit of air in it to allow the fluid to expand when hot. I put in Rockshox 3W suspension/Damper oil.

I went in the garage and dialed it up all the way and then backed off 8 clicks, which is where the manual said to
use as a starting point.....there is a noticeable difference between the two. I guess I thought turned up all the way should be a bitch to turn the handles.

I would have sent mine in but they charge over $70 for the service at Scott's.

thanks
Joel
