12 months service
06/30/15 11:00 AM

My beloved ZX14R will be 1 year old by the end of August. It has approximately 4000 miles. I will be doing my own maintenance and would like to know your feedback on what needs to be done. What I am thinking now are:

1. Replacing air cleaner with OEM
2. Replacing clutch and brake fluid
3. Checking bolts and nuts
4. Checking chain tension

Oil/filter has already been replaced. Am I missing anything?

I can't think of anything else at only 4000 miles but your air filter is probably ok for another 4000 unless you've been riding in dusty or wet conditions. Pull it out and have a look.

Rook,

Thank you for your feedback. I will check the air filter. It costs $55 so if I can use it for additional 4k miles that would be a big help.

The Gen1 service manual specs evey 11.250 miles. I've gone 11,000 and it was very dirty. I don't think I ride in a dusty envirinment and I don't normally ride in the rain. I think 11000 miles will be too long for most bikes.

You could remove the levers and clean and lube. I'm updating this thread right now.

You could lube your throttle cables if you feel like getting into it.

I guess you could take apart the the rear brake pedal linkage at the master cylinder and clean and lube. The OEM rear brake and shift pedals don't require lube, I don't think. ...maybe the rear brake pedal does?

Get a service manual. Links to free downloadable copies can be found here. They list all the service intervals int he owners manual, and the same thing in the service manual. But specifications and instructions are int he service manual only for everything kaw doesn't consider "owner serviceable".

Hope you haven't put all the plastics on yet, Oldman. Just as I posted this yesterday, the forum went out.

I decided to pull my air filter and have a look since I have a new one sitting here. This is it after 6,000 miles.

Here's a pic of one after 11,000 miles which is what the book suggests for service limit.

I think 6000 is long enough. 8,000 might be a bit too much. I tossed that 6k filter out and put in my BMC since we have pretty clean air here at the height of summer. I'll pop the fresh stocker in after a few hundred miles.

Thanks. Gonna be a barn burner (I hope not) BIG fireworks at my uncle's place in upper MI. Get to see all the cousins and eat like a pig. I probably won't drink any beer.
