I'm 80% there
09/22/17 5:58 PM

A dealer 90 minutes from me quoted me 11,600 out the door for a leftover 2016 14R SE. He also said he'd give me 4500 for my passion red 06 14. Is there really that much of a difference to justify me trading up ? I ride maybe 3k a year and do love to twist the throttle when challenged which now days is mostly from modern high hp cars.

I think you know the answere but for the sake of Friday rhetorical questions; was there any difference between your '03 12R and your '06 14?

I have pondered that myself and decided against it. Not that I would not want a newer 14 but in my case I have multiple bikes and the 14 sits more than gets ridden. Mine is also a 2008 super dark blue that I have made to fit an old fat guy and still puts 180 hp on the ground. It also only has barely over 5000 miles on it so to me it is worth more than book value even tho I know I would probably never get that much.
If the 14 is your main or only ride then an upgrade is about time and definitely nothing wrong with a new bike.

Good luck and have fun with the new 14. I think you have already made up your mind!!!!!

Last year at the drag-strip there was a guy with a 2007 ZX-14 running a 30 shot of nitrous with full exhaust. We were neck and neck and whoever had the fastest 60' usually won the race, so I would say there is a significant difference between your current bike and the newer 14R. We ran one race when he was running out of nitrous and it was not much of a race then. I don't know what else to tell you, if you can afford it, I'd say go for it.

Definitely faster like Skewed said. But day to day riding and toying with cars? Probably won't make much difference. Buy the bike and sell yours privately, my guess is it's resell is probably around 6k-7k. Overall not a bad transaction but the price of the '16 doesn't really have anything to do with your trade which isn't bad but is most likely at a loss to you.

I don't really like sellling things myself, so I might be more inclined to take that deal. If I was in the same boat and decided it was worth the update/upgrade I wouldn't feel bad about it. Do it and be happy.

Gen1-Gen2 Upgrade/Changes

Take a look at this link as it may help you to decide...

Me personally, when it comes to ZX-14's I've had an 07 and a 12.
Give me the Gen 2 anyday...

Yannih I agree if they had no bike and was asking if they should go with a Gen 1 or Gen 2. 3k miles a year isn't a lot of riding. They're not a drag racer, but do enjoy the bike's acceleration toying around with cars. I'm sure it's not racing for money or titles, would've upgraded a long time ago if that was the case. So it's just fun toying around with cars.

So all the benefits of Gen 2, such as the seat being more comfortable and slightly faster, aren't as significant of a factor. For day to day riding, just for the stupidity of other drivers, ABS would probably be the best thing about this update and you all konw how I feel about ABS for motorcycles.

Keep in mind that at first this seems like a deal, and it's not a bad deal. But then there's all the cost associated to buying a new bike to factor in. Exhuast, tunes, tweaks. Quite possibly as well, insurance may be a factor in cost if a loan is taken out and say full coverage insurance and year round insurance are required.

This clearly isn't a no brainer because otherwise the OP would've been "hey I traded my bike in for a '16!" and not asking for really trying to justify the difference. Clearly if there were significant flaws with the Gen 1, they would've gotten rid of the bike a long time ago.

OK you guys talked me into it. I'm washing and waxing today along with pulling off parts. I'll try to sell locally for a week before taking a hit on trade in.

Well I picked it up yesterday after work. When they told me my trade was only worth 4k I was ready to go back home as my budget was based on 4500 that I was told over the phone. They rolled out a used 2016 with 1100 miles on it that put me back in the game. It has some Coffman shorty's on it which actually sound pretty good but I can't imagine what kind of gains you would see. I'll have a few 1st gen goodies listed soon.

Better than new if you ask me. You got an aftermarket exhaust for free. That Coffmans looks great and if it sounds good, you might want to keep it a while. You probably don't need the extra power of a full system but a Brocks CT meg would do the trick when you have the $$. CONGRATS!

Congratulations!

So because you started off asking what's the diff between the G1 and G2 and if its worth upgrading, what's is your assessment now that you know?

Most obvious improvement to me is handling especially low speed. Next there is more power everywhere except 0-4000 probably because of the untuned slipons vs my 06 flashed ecu with Hindle. Ecu flash is imminent ! This is by far the smoothest engine I have ever owned...the top of the windshield doesn't even vibrate at idle ! Thanks everyone for your replies.

If I was going to flash a G2 ECU again I would use Don Guhl. 3 yrs ago I went with the CBLAST hype and I was one of the lucky ones and had no problems.

Thanks lytnin ! I got at least 5 compliments in 30 miles of riding yesterday ! No shame cruderudy I too rode the wave of "creamy smoothness " until Nels fixed it the right way. I gotta admit there were plenty of members here throwing out plenty of warnings.

Well from one 2016 SE owner to another....congrats on the buying of the "stealth fighter".
This bike is smooth beyond compare......and WILL get you in trouble!! It might even scare you a bit with it's willingness to go BLOODY FAST!!!
Joined this forum last year when mine was brand new......now 9,000 km's later this bike still amazes me. Great ppl here who will answer questions you may have...

I just got back from Cali at a 1/2 mile event on my stock gen 2 with just a tune and Delkevic tri ovals....it did 189 in the half.

This is the easiest bike to ride I have ever owned in decades of riding.

the only mistake I made was not buying one sooner. I'm sure you'll feel the same.
