Dad's considering a V-rod opinions?
06/22/16 10:55 AM

He's 80 years old but the V-rod is very low and feels light as his 600 cc Bergman. 18,000 miles on the 2003 HD V-rod, looks like it's in good shape, some scrapes on the outer bottom frame of course but no signs of a crash. $6000. Belt drive feels a little rounded at the corners of the teeth but I doubt it's worn out.

What do you think? What might need work? What's a good price?

What do you think?

I think your Dad is awesome.

What might need work?

It's a Harley chassis with a Porsche engine... What won't.

What's a good price?

He's 80... time is money...

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” HST

Was the engine really developed by Porche?

Anything in the 5k range. 6k is for excellent, no problems. You found scratches and belt climb. No history of the bike. Only thing going for it is not crashed and make one last pass at it. Steers straight? No levers, pegs, front fender tips, grips look new, bars been moved or never moved? Cold start? If you already seen it, go knock on the door unannounced, ask to hear it one more time, but you stand behind the exhaust. Did it puff? No. $5,500 takes it home? 5,600 and no more.

OK, Hub. I will tell Dad. It has been sitting a long time and no buyer. I think he mentioned it last summer. I'm thinking 5.5k if no puff and a test ride reveals no problems. If anything looks fishy, then it's up to Dad if he wants to buy himself a project.

Rook, your dad is an absolute legend. Nothing surer.

But no matter how you dress it up, it's still a Harley. And 2003?
Does that not ring any alarm bells?
Sorry to be negative and I know I will be offending people but surely there are other options that provide more comfort, reliability and performance.

Yeah 03 is old but only 18000 miles sorta balances it out. The complaints Hub posted are only 10 (and 2 are for the V-Rod. Gas in oil serious problem. Engine stall when clutch is disengaged. Who knows how this represents all the 03 V-rods? Probably a good idea to be cautious though since this was the first year the bike came out. This is sounding like a real potential project. LOWBALL!
