Starter trouble?
06/07/09 3:57 PM

Has anyone here ever had any problems with their starer? Mine is an '06 with 16.5K and pretty much stock. Two times in the last month I have had issues starting my bike. The starter would make a clunk and sound like it was jammed. The oil light would dim as if there was a heavy load on the battery. Sometimes(6 or so) it will do it to a lesser degree and cause the trip, avg, and range numbers to reset.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks...Vince

Loose connection or failed battery. Start at the battery connections and work your way from there.

Like moto stated start at the battery connections. Mine loosened up on me twice so the last time I put some medium loc-tite on them. It's usually the positive cable that loosen just a little.

Mine arrived that way! Dealership, despite inspection, had not tightened battery connections... I could finger tighten them much more than they were.

Same here...got stuck at the bank parking lot. I took the the whole frinkin' bike apart in the lot..bike was new...I didn't know you could access the battery from the side

It was nice to know the toolkit had everything I needed.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll give the battery cables a check. Although, since I had the battery out for the winter, I can only blame myself if it is loose.

OK...I cleaned the 2 copper rings and the frame at that contact point. I also cleaned both battery cables and both posts. The negetive side had a lot of white build up. Voltage with just the key on was 12.3v and 14.3 with the bike running at idle. Bike started with no problem but as I said, this is a some of the time type problem. I'll post if it seems to have worked or what I had to do to correct it.

While I had it out, I wrote down all of the OEM numbers for the battery as well as the outside dimensions. Just in case I have to go to Sears and get a replacement.
