running rich and other issues..
01/04/14 5:37 PM

hello all , I just bought a nice zx14 2007 and being the 2nd owner want to do a nice baseline maintance so i know where i stand before i really get to feeeling free with the bike. i started with a oil and filter change and cleaned sprockets/chain. Lots of grime built up. I pulled the tank and noticed the secondary butterflies are removed, the valves are a little dirty, but i am a little worried as the intake runners where wet? is this normal for a FI bike? i am coming from carbed bikes so i have no experance here.....

I got only 30 mpg commuting on my first and only tank of gas so far to get said baseline and now am parking till i get spark plugs, air filter, and most importantly i need my valve clearances checked!!!!!.

the bike is running a 16 43 tooth setup and duel muzzy slip-ons. other than that no mods i see or know of.

any advise or ideas on the intake runners? is that normal? it rides and pulls great.

Peace and Love Ron

Normal are the wet runners.

30 mpg is pretty thirsty. I get 38-40 with stock gearing.

My previous ZX14, an 06, averaged 34 MPG with stock 17/41 gearing. Your gearing 16/43 is about 10% taller so your mileage isnt bad. I bet with a tune up and new filter you will see better mileage. If not, dont be afraid to change back to stock gearing. The sprockets are cheap and will help your mileage at the expense of a little acceleration.

I agree the 30 mpg is low. My '08 gets high 30's to low 40's depending on how gently or not gently I'm using the throttle. But I've never seen lower than 35 mpg.

My ZX is basically factory other than the Muzzy slip-ons. Does it have a Power Commander installed or has the ECU been re-flashed? Either can impact fuel economy as you sacrifice that for more HP.

this bike was heathun's here on the forum (cybil) i bought her on 12-22 and are doing maintance (baseline to see where everthing is before i really get to have fun with it. right now i have it torn down to check valave clearance which i have no clue if it was even done on the engine he bought.... ROMAN did he buy the engine off you? if so could i get some info? in the face to face he said it was from a rearended zx14 09 model. the is no power commader on it. so really stock, muzzy slip ons, and a 16 tooth counter sprocket (which i will be going back to stock also.

new plugs are on the way and the k & n is in it now as the stocker looked a bit dirty and i did not know the last time it was changed.

any help or ideas?

Peace and Love Ron

oh i should have a idea on the valve specs sometime this week. i am slowly doing this myself between other jobs.
