Cycle World september 2015 Turn and Burn
08/04/15 10:58 AM

I received my September copy of Cycle World a few days ago and they had their second Turn and Burn 0-180 MPH shootout.

The BMW S1000RR was quickest to 180 mph besting the H2 by .04 seconds, 16.00 vs 16.04 seconds respectively.

The H2 was quickest in the quarter mile at 9.81 seconds 152.21 MPH.

H2 was quickest 0-100 and 100 to 150 but second to the BMW 150 to 180.

Surprisingly, the new Yamaha R1 posted the highest speed, tapping out at 188.7 MPH while the H2 was second fastest at 184.6 mph.

The R1 set the quickest lap time, easily the best machine on the track and posted excellent numbers everywhere else, 0-100, 100 to 150, 150 to 180 and 1/4 mile were only slightly lower than the S1000RR and H2.

If I was in the market for a new bike right now, the R1 would be at the top of my list due to overall performance in every category.

BMW S1000RR
Dry weight 416 lbs
181.7 HP
0-180 MPH 16.00

Kawasaki H2
Dry Weight 501 lbs
189.8 HP
0-180 MPH 16.04

Yamaha R1M
Dry Weight 419 lbs
173.3 HP
0-180 MPH 16.68

You could throw a blanket over them Hub, R1 performance on the track test tips the balance in it's favor. H2 opted out of track test, Mother Teapot said the ZX-10R was better for this, BMW was second quickest lap time to the R1.

Well Hub, H2 did best the Beemer in all other categories including top speed, the BMW just posted a very quick sprint from 150 to 180 that made the difference.

The R1 apparently borrowed some of the high speed aerodynamics and spot on gearing from Yamaha's MotoGp bikes and was able to go faster with less HP.

The H2 has the power no doubt but probably the drag coefficient of a brick which hurt it from 150 to 180. Also a little too much fat around the waist didn't help matters. Mothership needs to put it on a diet and tweek the boost a few psi

All they need to do is change the ECU so the throttle blades stay 100% open after 10,500 RPMs and the H2 will smoke all of them...... Lose the exhaust system and save 36 lbs and if you still want more raise the limiter to 14,200 and you'll put down over 268 at the rear wheel. She will never be as good on the track but you will break your face smiling that's for sure! Love this bike.....:)

That is the obvious followup, what would things look like with a simple flash and slip on treatment between all the contenders. We know that the H2 has a bunch of headroom in that department. How much has the H2 been detuned for street use compared to the others becomes the question.

Tooncin I'm sure the others will gain some also but there is no way they will gain 65HP like the H2 when you do what I listed....But I like all those bikes for sure. Just sad that they have to de tune the H2 to be able to sell her.....

If you think that's sad, the new Honda RC213V-S only puts out 101 bhp. And it costs over $180,000. AND, the $14,000 track-only hop-up kit is only available in Europe.

IMO, the R1M is the most motorcycle for the money, sportbike-wise.

"Just sad that they have to de tune the H2 to be able to sell her....."...well...I can see why, owning this bike.I think Kawasaki definitely wanted to make sure their machine didn't get trashed straight out the crate.Probably 'most' guys that got this bike were not pro racers.Experienced some...yes.But as we know(somefun)..this bike is a wild ride.Taming it for the masses was a smart move.(IMO).The mods necessary for opening up everything really aren't a huge problem.I don't think so anyway.

I guess 650Ib got his to 270 HP.With his piping and flash(es). That's pretty bold for a 500(possibly less actually) lb motorcycle with a stock(shorter)wheelbase.

I may send mine to him again as well...but I'm pretty sure right now she's taching a bit above 14K.It looked like it anyway...the quick glance I took at full speed ahead;)What's quite amazing is the ride quality when she's up in those ranges.I swear...planted...smooth.Tucked in,there's NO wind feel at all.And no death grip on the bars either.Just awesomeness!

This suspension is extremely well done.Solid...reliable.Someone said something about the aeros not being 'up to par' on this bike.I have to totally disagree. She smooths out so damn nice in triple digits...just way cool.

according to early published specs on the gen1 zx-14, it did 0-186 in 13 seconds.
I just did 0~178 in 20 seconds and that was starting in 2nd gear about 40 mph, short shifting to 3rd and only 65% throttle until I got into 6th gear.

I would guess that to be the case given equal rider skills/weight and conditions. The low end grunt of the 14 should give it a significant advantage from a dead stop and the smaller bikes probably won't start gaining ground until very high speed. I think the story could be a little different if both the liter bike and the 14r start from high speed. The liter bikes have better acceleration at high speed but they might not have the ability to reach the top speed of a 14. SOOOOO if you have the balls and the race is long enough, you should be able to creep past any liter bike if you didn't loose him from the starting line.

Guys with one stroke of the enter key you lift the restriction on the H2 and gain 40HP. At 10,000 Rpms the ECU closes the throttle blades down to 28% to limit the HP out put and emissions. So with the flash it then will open 100% at 10,000 RPMs all the way up to 14,400 RPMs and believe me there's nothing catching this bike at that point. I have a few and the H2 make them all feel like slow.....

I asked the H2 guy why his bike jumped out so fast, he told me the bike makes 10 psi before he cracks the throttle.

Nice. If the objective is to jump out in front early but if the object is to win, the turbo busa does it. It's faster.
