Activating Tail Lights for Engine Braking
11/19/18 10:44 AM

A few months ago I was driving around in the car and I noticed a motorcycle that was activating its brake lights fairly frequently. I realized that his brake light was coming on every time he closed the throttle which I thought was in principle a great idea; especially since the ZX14 has pretty significant engine braking.

For the particular motorcycle that I saw, I thought a delay between when the throttle was closed and the light was turned on would be preferred as the reason I noticed is the light was going off and on frequently as the rider adjusted the throttle for the road conditions.

So, has anyone seen a product that does this?

This is what I have found so far:

1. I think still today: if you keep the brake light on, or say it was stuck on, the battery would run down and stop firing the engine is problem #1. So in other words, the light being on [upon lift] you're wearing [discharging] the puppy down some.
2. When coming to a light, my eyes are trained to the mirror. I kill the engine at lights. So I need to be ready to jump off or light it back up; here she comes.
3. I'm sitting at a light, the truck behind me stopped. He lights up a cigarette, lets off the brake, bumps into my exhaust and dents it. We pull over, comes out of the truck, then comes up to me, is saying sorry right and left. His breath is 0.8 kind of high. Being at night I could not see damage to the muffler at the time. So the bottom line is... Do I really need an engine brake light if I still get bonked anyway?

There used to be a brake-light flasher module that worked via a series of mercury switches at increasing angles-the more front-end dive, the faster the flash. Not sure if it was wired to activate only when the brakes were applied, but theoretically, it could have been set off by engine braking if it caused front-end compression.
