Oil Change ?
05/23/10 11:08 AM

So I changed mine out last year. 2008 zx14. And I was going to do it again.
So I have two different quarts on my shelf. One Shell Rotella T, and the other Castrol gxt. And I cant remember which one I used in the bike and which one I used in my 335i? LOL

The Rotella is in the blue bottle, it is 5w-40. Meets api cj-4 service, and meets requirements of api SM.

The Castrol is 10w-40 api SM, SL, SJ, and SH.

Im pretty sure the Rotella T is the one I used in the bike. But the zx14 book calls for 10w-40. API SE, SF, or SG. API SH, SJ or SL with JASO MA. I guess the MA is for our wet cluthces?

So if someone can point me in the right direction, and with the specific wording I need on the bottle, that would be great! Or if you have a different synthetic oil to use I would like to here of that also.

But pretty much what Letters am I looking for on the side of the bottle?

Also Im in the midwest, I dont ride in cold temps. 55 and above. But below 100. So what is a good weight for that?
I also noticed on the Rotella T bottle is really only states deisel trucks? But I think that has been covered before.

Thanks all

I use 10/40 full synthetic Royal Purple Max Cycle.10/40 is a good all around weight.Always works fine in my baby.I don't SPECIFICALLY use Royal Purple.Just started using it end of last year.In all honesty, the Kawachem 10/40 full synthetic works just as well as far as I can tell. The only difference I "notice" MAY be the oil life.I think the RP lasts a bit longer....but it's oranges and apples to me.They BOTH work very well. It's a toss up IMO.I change mine anywhere between 2500 miles and 3500 miles....so who knows? The used oil always LOOKS the same!Shift quality and engine "noise" never seem compromised.I did notice with the Kawachem(Motul)that after a certain amount of time(usually in mine around 3,000 miles)the shift quality begins to degrade some.It gets "clickyer".So I normally change it then.

Quit being so GD cheap and go buy some fresh oil!

10W40 is good for -10 F to 104 F. 20W-40 is good 0 to 104. 50 weight is for hotter ambient temp than 104 F. 30 weight only good to 86 F.

I have only used motorcycle oil in the 14 so far and it doesn't seem to be stocked at the stealer in anything other than 10W-30 or 10W-40. 40 has been my choice.

So what letters or numbers am I looking for on the mobil one? I dont have my book here with me and want to get some on the way home. Thanks in advance.

Looks like it will be 10w-40 weight wise. Just the numbers and letters in the API chart.
