EPA Yoshimura Exhaust
12/23/14 8:15 PM

How does the Hayabusa get one made for it but none for us? I live in NYC and with the new EPA standards being enforced I am gonna be stuck with the stock cans.

I hope they are not actually writing tickets just for loud exhausts. For once I can say I'm glad I live in Harley town. Loud pipes are pretty normal. If They start clamping down on the noise level, it will make riding a lot less fun.

They occasionally set up check points with decibel meters Also looking for EPA stamps on exhausts as well. At checkpoints any aftermarket exhaust gets sound checked. Even if the noise is not obnoxious.

I'd seriously have to consider leaving NY for good. I remember a thread from several months back about legislation to control the noise of motorcycles. To tell you the truth, I never thought this would happen. If NY now makes this a crime, it will spread to all other states. Lets' face it, most people have more important concerns but if they don't ride a motorcycle, they will not have a problem with cracking down on loud exhausts. Who will profit from this? The state of NY will profit if the checkpoints are cost effective. I doubt they will be able to fix some bridges with the proceeds. Most people don't ride motorcycles.

This will create a little problem for the aftermarket exhaust companies, won't it? I hope they simply make removable baffles and packing for variable sound level rather than do away with open exhausts altogether. My CANNON exhausts (which is made in Japan) has this. I don't know if it would reduce the volume enough for EPA standards but it seems like removable baffles and packing would be a good direction for the industry to go if the crackdown spreads throughout the country. LOL or if tickets are expensive enough, we'll just have to go to the track.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. Say if a headlight does not wake up the drivers, then the noise will. Say you will sue everyone that voted that law in and hold them responsible for the first death of some rider all quiet with all his reflectors on, headlight, helmet, etc. It served no purpose. It is now fact that a silent motor did not save a life. That's a FACT! If it happens over and over, is that not factual evidence no headlight worked, no helmet helped, no noise either. SUE THE STATE!

I hope that works but the obvious counterargument is that motorcyclists with loud bikes helmets AND headlights still sometimes get killed by other motorists. I think we'll have to do what we always do when we do something illegal...don't do it often and don't do it where you know they are looking.

I am in the process of getting a leftover 2013 Pearl white 14R and I am contemplating leaving the exhaust stock so I won't have to deal with the hassle. I have a 2006 passion red 14 which I have Yoshimura TRC Carbon slip ons. Noise is not much louder than stock with the inserts. At checkpoint a few weeks ago officer told me even though pipe is not really that loud it was still illegal. He gave me a break cause he was a rider as well But he told me not everyone would be cool and let it slide like he did. They have a bill in the pipeline that they would check for EPA stamp when bike was parked on the street cause as law is right now they have to have a decibel meter and catch you "in the act". That is why they are only checking at checkpoints. If bill passes into law. Regular beat cops will be able to check exhausts for stamps when bike is parked. :-(

epa lawI also found this, they tried passing this law but it was NOT passed for the EPA sticker on the exhaust, but I am sure they could still give a sound ticket:

All aftermarket exhaust installed on or after 2012 is illegal here in California unless you have the EPA sticker on the exhaust. They can't pull you over for it, they can only address it if you busted for something else.

No offense Californians but cops and decible meters and Epa stickers? Law enforcement officials should maybe concentrate on the criminal element instead of joe tax payer, who spends his/her legal income on their modded bike. This is outrageous. AMA should be lobbying this as an infringement of your rights based on stupidity of the law. Sorry to use my outdoor voice, but what next? Will I receive a ticket for showing up with a modded bike. The outcry continues. Mad love boys!

The Ama is involved. TThis law was made by Arnold Schwarzenegger before he left office. Now there trying to take away our lane splitting rights. Signed the petition to keep this from happening.

Well benedict arnold signed it, but it was Made by Sen. Fran Pavey (D-Agoura Hills).

She said : "Basic common sense and decency dictates that when a motorcycle drives by and sets off every car alarm on the street, that is too loud.”

You have your harley's to thank for that, I have never heard a sport bike set off a car alarm,
but I suppose it happens ....
