Slow 14
01/08/23 5:18 PM

Out riding today and came up on a clear straight road and hit it, got up to 178 before I had to let off. I have done 180 before. I dont feel the bike has a lot left just guessing 185. I weigh 230 and had a givi trunk on back but next to nothing in it. The bike was in traction control 1. My bike has full brocks pipe with a guhl flash. Drop the trunk and leave traction control off and maybe a little more, I think it was slightly uphill also. Does not really matter 178 or 180 is plenty fast. I like the acceleration of this bike the most. What is everybodys experience with this, asking heavier riders specifically?

I'm over 230 or there about. It's in 6th gear and still gets me out of trouble. Around here it 170's an run out of room. When no one is around maybe 160 exit ramp speeds, but more like 120's these days.

You always appreciate swapping off bikes and have to handle the throttle a different way.

Every 7,500 miles I swap the spark plugs as per man you will feel a difference right off.

Take that top case off!

The aerodynamics and drag coefficient at those speeds matters hugely.

Weight/down force is more of a mechanical grip thing and has less to do
with overall top speed. 1/4 mile, yes, top speed no.

It's all about aerodynamics and horsepower for top speed.
Aerodynamic drag quadruples like every 60mph. Even a small reduction
in Cd will make a difference, yet alone a giant billboard attached to the
back of the bike. 180lb vs 230lb will make very little difference. If you're tucked in.

Even the small ram air hole in the front of the bike is a trade
off in aerodynamics vs any hp gain vs top end speed. It's really
more of a marketing thing, it looks cool.

my 2 cents.

Hub, I definitely need to change out plugs this year. My problem also is getting enough of a straight in to not have to let off, also worrying about any traffic or police. I thought my fjr was fast until I got the 14, it is on another level. piken I will take the trunk off sometime and try and get a good run in. Not that 180 isnt fast enough but thanks for your replies. I like my trunk although it does not look good, it sure is useful, beer run, grocery store or just taking my lunch to work.

That is weird. It should pull right up to redline in 6th, not that I would know. Road slope CAN definitely affect acceleration but I would say it would have to be something like >1 degrees.

Plugs will make a big difference. They are worn out somewhere between the 7500 miles and 12k miles.

Tune up. maybe fuel? just some not great gas? oil change (if over 2k miles). tire inflation. Make sure you don't have anything dragging (wheels rotate properly, brakes dragging), chain tension, proper tuck although IME that's not even vital, although I haven't ever sat entirely up

I don't know anything about the luggage stuff I would imagine that would be a fairly large amount of drag and probably wouldn't even attempt it myself.

I think the original reason I asked this question was because I always see videos of people accelerating on the zx14 up to full speedo 190 like its nothing. Not worried about it bike is very fast and top speed is not really what I want, I like the acceleration. The trunk is not coming off as I just find it too useful, bike is still very fast and stable with the trunk on. I had a 2005 rocket 3 with an aftermarket fairing and that bike had a speed wobble at 120 was frightening. Did not hit 120 again on that bike. The zx is smooth as can be with the trunk on, although I realize it slows it down some. My fjr 1300 has a factory trunk that I take off and always put it back on. I just like the extra storage. That bike looks much better without it also, but again that bike is quick enough even with the trunk.

Hagrid, no all my top runs were with full and traction control 1 setting. One of these days I will do a run with full and traction control off. Also without the trunk.

Send off your ECU to http://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/ . He will unleash your Beast.

When I travel, my top box drags wind and cuts 2 mpg. I've only tested it to 122mph. I doubt it will still be back there at 180mph. The Givi side cases are only rated to 85mph (to not fly off).

My main concern would be losing the hard bags. Over the years on this forum, there's been a few times where people have had problems with aftermarket items flying, sometimes tearing off their bikes.

I just watched a speed test video where one of the test bikes had factory hard bags and during one of the test runs one of them tore off.

my base plate for the givi trunk is bolted on to the sw motech plate which is bolted on to the frame. Unless something breaks nothing is coming off. Famous last words. Have been riding around with traction control off and the trunk off and the bike does feel somewhat faster.

ok, decided there is nothing slow about a zx14 moded or not. 46 degrees out and left a light with traction control off and the bike was spinning all over the place. I have 3 bikes and the fjr is the best to tell you the truth. But my heart is with the zx14.

I do not think I have ever redlined in first gear. Redlined in second once and she will do 120 top of second.

42 rear, I dont know what the front is. Bought the bike used with brock full system and guhl flash. It is fast, my original title "slow 14" is a joke, bike is very fast. Hit 170 today easy but had to slow down as a car passing another car 75 vs 80mph kind of thing. Turbo might be fun.

"I do not think I have ever redlined in first gear. Redlined in second once and she will do 120 top of second"

The reason I asked is because 120mph is more like 3rd topped out for me than second 17/42 gearing..I do an occasional Land Speed event and would really like to get 120mph out of second :) Here is my 2nd gear at 1100 with 17/42 gearing 103mph

I am working this week but hopefully by next weekend I take the front cover off and tell you. And in 3rd my bike will definitely pull 150, i like entering the onramp in 3rd and she gets up to speed real fast. I could try hitting redline again in second to make sure but I spaced out and heard it bouncing off the rev limiter looked down and it was 120.

we have weekend races coming up for the next two weekends so will get some more video at that time ,,If you can mount a video cam to catch your gauges , it is a lot safer than eyeballing ..:) Just saying...
