Chain length
07/05/17 1:24 PM

Howdy,
I have a new chain someone gave me. I want to find out if I can use it.
I plan to change my gearing to 16/42. Does anyone know the proper chain length for this combo?
2006 ZX14.
Thanks

Mad

If I'm reading this correctly....

Stock is 17/42 - 118 links

Changing to 16/42 - 118 links

This will only move the axle back .15"

Stock width 17/42 = 27.54"
Custom width 16/42 = 27.69"

I dont see this will be a problem.

If your chain link count is more or less you can also
plug that into gearing commander to see the width of the sprockets too.
If count is more you can always remove a couple of links.

You can double check this and much more on....

What did the 06 come with? Could of sworn I saw a 41 on the rear sprocket when I had the wheel of for tires. Thought I also read that it is not recommended to go any smaller than the 17 on the front as the 530 link size isn't good on it to rap that tight of a radius. Chain length will start increasing from the 118 though if you start growing the rear sprocket for gearing. Not by much though, I think it is 1 link for every 2 teeth on the rear.

I'm also curious about anyone hearing anything about not using a 16T countershaft. Anyone?

I always heard the Gen 1 made a whining noise at certain rpm with a 16 tooth. I went to 17/45. I did go with a link or two longer chain but it lengthened my wheelbase a tad over stock by the time I got it tightened up. Probably could have gone with the I would put a 45 tooth on there and see how it fits with your current chain. A 45 tooth looks cooler and if you go with aluminum, it will still be half the weight of steel. Use a steel front. Read over my tutorial about sprocket and chain change and you might find the # of teeth I used. I'm sure it's in there, probably in the intro.

According to the the post below the tutorial, the stock Gen has 116 pins. I went to 118 pins which means I added one link (two inner plates, 2 outer plates, 2 pins = one link). Probably could have stuck with 116 pin and had a slightly shorter wheelbase which I would have preferred. Pretty tough to test the length though unless you cut the chain first.

Next time I do it, I'm sticking with a 45 rear and going with 116 pins.
