whats with this tranny
07/30/15 4:46 PM

alright, let me start by saying this is probably my 8th bike, first big bore bike ( owned many many zx10r's, now own a 2014 aprilia rsv4-F and a 2012 zx14r)

This transmission is just weird....its smooth but with every shift you can feel the gear engage, if that makes sense....on the aprilia i can kick the shifter and all you feel is the lever move up and you're in gear.

this one its like kick up--> feel the gear engage not so smoothly and then its fine...its never popped out of gear or anything like that, but its almost hard to get the smooth shift that all my zx10's had and my aprilia being the best one thus far

If i put a little load on the engine then shift its smooth MOST of the time, but if im just cruising and try shifting to the next gear its always an odd feeling...it never requires effort to push the lever up its just clunky...

do i have a transmission issue? or is this normal?

it does have an air shifter equipped and im assuming its been used ( not by me) ...but the bike only has 2k miles on it, i've heard of 5000+ passes without issues on these motors/trannys...so im wondering what the deal is.

The Gen 2 tranny is really smooth everywhere except the "clunk" going into first (unless your holding in the clutch for like 30 secs before shifting). It sounds like you have a tranny issue or maybe you are "hyper sensitive" when it comes to shifting, no offense intended. I am a armorer and feel a lot of triggers that are terrible and the people that carry them tell me they are fine..... When I hand them one that has been modified and totally smoothed out, they tell me they feel the same. Some people have the touch and some just will never get it.

Well, its not NOT smooth...its just night and day difference from say my RSV4 ( which in theory makes sense, as its double the price of the zx14r) im just not happy with it....

i currently have a mcintosh extended swingarm, and im not sure if this would impact the shifting due to the chain being longer/tighter to prevent too much sagging.

"The Gen 2 tranny is really smooth everywhere except the "clunk" going into first" I can't agree more. At signal stops, sometimes it is embarrassing as my ZX makes a huge clunk noise as if it is an old junk bike. Other than that, the tranny is pretty smooth. What viscosity of oil do you use?

I bet the extended chain is having a huge impact.

My 14R is very sensitive to chain slack quality. When it gets towards the loose end of things I experience more "half completed" shifts at low speeds. This phenomenon disappears at high revs, however.

The fact remains, when my shift quality deteriorates, one hex flat of slack adjuster attention solves the issue.

If it has an air shifter installed, then I can only assume that it has been sent down the strip a few times. A maladjusted ram could possibly cause shift fork damage via ram over travel. It's not a problem I've seen before, but I suppose it would accelerate wear and tear. However, to alleviate any worries that might be generated by my opening clause, I will say that my 14R has had the N-1 clunk since mile zero.

bent shift fork symptoms=lots of effort to shift/getting stuck in gear no?

My situation is not so, when the bike is off it shifts into first very smoothly as it should, and won't go into 2nd because of the positive neutral finder, but when im riding, in 2nd and 3rd sometimes the shift just isn't 110% perfect...maybe i am being too picky or expecting too much.

Besides what hag covered with the chain adjust, next is oil change. Go for it. You bought it used, correct?
Next, [the air if any] is now change the brake and clutch fluids. So since it probably was never done, now is the time.
About the only thing left is lever adjustment. Set the lever farther out and see if that cured it or go the other way.

This bike has a ramp system where it breaks the clutch loose you lock it up too hard at the rear wheel. So in the beginning, I noticed this ramp would follow my lever out. My deal was that by moving the chain via a flat on the adjust bolt, got the lever sorted out and can't recall who cleared up that feedback, but it was shifting so sweet today.

My '14 14R with 3k miles and Motul 300V shifts like butta and seems to be getting better, low speed easy, and high rpm hard shifts are smooooth, just snick snick into gear with no effort. 1 high speed track days of ~125 miles shifting at redline without clutch. No experience with dragstrip runs - 1/4 mile at a time seems like a lot of beat down on the gear train. Change the oil, bleed the clutch,,and Re-evaluate, the situation. Maybe through in a Blackstone oil analysis wear analysis looking for bad juju metals? Can't hurt and not very expensive!

Good luck and let's us know what you find

clutch fluid looks good, clutch has no air in the system, however the chain is super tight ( well more so than any bike i've ever owned, barely any freeplay )

Now, this is my first stretched bike, should the chain run tight because of the stretch? or do normal chain adjustment rules apply?

i put 10-40 synthetic in it the second i bought it so the oil is brand new ( well 500 miles on it roughly )

Worst case scenario i have to rebuild the transmission, i understand its split casing and what not...what is the typical overall cost for an operation such as this?

Let's see if bullet still has proof.
1. Yes, I want slack.
a. I want to leave my chain just were it sits.
b. I now want to remove the rear shock.
c. I should see if my chain is even tighter still how it shortens heading up the wheel well.
d. I say fuk datshit, let me just make sure I have slack for shifting the shit outta this bike.

2. So, Alex, I'll take hag hung my chain variable up for grabs is 400 dollars worth of forks alone.
a. I want to adjust my chain and throw I don't know, 3, maybe 2 flats in?
b. I want to see my high spots on the chain rung if any.
c. I now take a ride and with every gear, I want to load the rear brake, WOT the throttle, hold up... I want to set my rev limiter to whatever the lowest is, or say 6k rpm is the cutoff. Why?
d. I will now WOT the throttle, load the rear brake, force each gear to come out of it's slot, I tore up the dogs so bad with all the missed shifts, add up the OO and his missed shifts, it pops out or not?

3. You made no mentioned about lever distance, so focus on the chain slack and lots of it.
a. I can't force it out of any gear.
b. I can't even miss a shift.
c. I can't believe it's a whole new transmission and it didn't cost me a dime.

Signed,

I'm going for the crapshoot of bullet is proof once again.
