CLUTCH SPRING QUESTIONS
07/21/23 5:17 PM

Guys,

1. What is the installed height of the stock Zx14R clutch springs? Brocks mentions 1.04" in the specs for the green springs, is this the stock height spec? Stock seat pressure is 45lb right?

I installed a Brocks Real Street kit but I think its heavier then my needs justify so I am looking to balance the pressures between this level and stock. I bought some EBC +15% springs (in transit) and a spring pressure tester, now I just need some washers/spacers to tinker with. I'm looking at EBC +40-60 thou of shim and see where that comes up at.

2. If shimming a clutch spring do the shims do at the top (like the Brocks thick spacers) or at the bottom like you would for valve springs? I guess washers at the top would be lighter due to the larger ID that they locate against?

Cheers

OZ, Say it's 6 springs total. To hard to pull, triangulate 3 OEM, 3 Brocks. Washers might coil bind and tear or load the thread holes as the coil can no longer move.

Hey Hub,

Brocks says you can shim up to 242 thou (6mm) before coil bind, Im looking at 1mm shims.

See table on page 2 here:

https://brocksperformance.com/content/Instructions/ZX14/996421.pdf

Brocks green is 130lb seat pressure, Brocks purple is 47lb unshimmed. EBC may be about 49 to 52, I will confirm this when they arrive.

The shims I used went on the top of the spring, spring in first, then shim on top. I have a tutorial on that.

OZ, Okay, I see the limiter springs are not used. Did Brock say said pound gets you in the ballpark or figure start at the center and work you clutch feed up or down in pounds? No starting point, that's a lot of bike lean and cover popping.

OEM Clutch Springs:
Standard Free length: 32.1mm (1.26 in.)
Service Limit: 31.0mm (1.22 in.)

Like a valve assembly, I'd set the washer down in.
