asymetrical fairing?
06/10/09 5:45 PM

I am in the process of doing a vinyl stripe job on the 14. In doing so, I found it helpful to make a template out of acetate for cutting the vinyl around the ram air hole in the front fairing. I traced the headlights on the right side so that all I would need to do is flip the acetate to use the same template on the left side. It really looked like the headlight was a little higher on the left after using it to place the template. Is this possible? I have no idea how the molds are made for body panels but I have afeeling it's the old fashioned way - a sculpter makes a prototype out of clay and from that, the molds are cast. If I'm right, I suppose it is likely that fairings are not perfectly the same on both sides even though they look like they are.

Just curious if anyone had any thoughts or facts.

Don't know Rookster, but I suspect BMW can answer your asymmetrical query... WTF?

You know why they did that? For endurance racing in Europe. The round one is a pencil beam and the other a fog.And the gills on the right side are for low pressure so the big hole on the left sucks more hot air out.I listened to the guys on Friday for an hour+ talking about everything on the bike.Lots of technology and thought in it!!!!
That thing feels lighter than my new 09 6r too!!!!!

Who cares 'why' they did it, the thing is friggin' UGLY and no amount of techno-babble will rationalize it. The mismatched headlights work on the GS bikes, but come on... UGLY!

Interesting info NM. I actually don't mind the unusual characteristics/asymmetry (probably wouldn't buy it though). Will be interesting to see the spec/performance stats.
