Performance air filter and air fuel mixture
04/29/20 3:54 PM

Hello guys I plan on installing a performance air filter on my Zzr1400 2012 model. The bike is standard except for Akrapovich exhausts. Would installing performances air filter alter the air fuel mixture and smooth running of the engine?

Take the stock air filter out and remove the metal screen that's on one side of it. The air-fuel mixture will still be ok. Dyno tests from Brocks show that the stock air filter flows better than most aftermarket filters, unless you get a Sprint filter from him. The Sprint filter showed a couple more horsepower on his dyno. Lee Pritchard, (smokinzx14) says the stock filter is best, with the screen removed. I would think he would know best. He's tried them all. He's run 8.40's on a stock motored 14R, stock filter with the screen removed.

As mentioned, remove screen = Smoother.

A race filter will only gain you 1-2 hp at peak. The Sprint might be better but whatever they claim may be exaggerated. For that small of a gain in hp, it isn't altering your AFR much at all. You'd have hard time tuning for that alone. It won't make any noticeable improvement in performance. I've tried my BMC race and it's the same as OEM as far as I can tell. Probably any aftermarket is inferior at filtering out small particles compared to OEM. Well, duh!!! You can see through my BMC. It says "For closed course use only" and that's where I'd use it. IMO might as well get a custom tune if you're going to use it because it isn't doing anything without.

I've used my BMC. It's cool its fun but there is no change in performance. I had a map for my pipe and BMC race and that makes no difference with OEM filter or BMC. Can't tell. If I were seriously into racing I guess I'd look into buying a Sprint and see if that does anything different on the dyno. You won't notice a few hp by the seat of your pants.

Thanks guys really helpful to know oem still does the job. Not worth the money buying performance filter if oem Is best. Brocks vid on YouTube gives good insight into performance and comparison curves on Dyno. Haven’t had a chance to enjoy the beast due to the covid19 lockdown. I’m based in Sussex uk I guess you guys are the same

Yes, it's the same here for most people. We're closed off from gathering in groups. We can still ride though and I hear a lot of Harlys out there on the weekends already.

If you are a street guy the stock filter with the screen removed is more than adequate. Back in 2012 before Brock was selling the Sprint filters we got 225 RWHP out of the Louisville Slugger project bike running a stock OEM filter with the screen removed. The stock filter is more efficient at removing stuff you don't want in the engine and more than adequate for airflow for what you are running and no it will not affect the air/fuel ratio enough to cause a problem.
