Swing Arm Service / Removal?
04/14/14 12:59 PM

All of my dirt cycles get regular (approx. annually) swing arm bearing re-greasing (and the steering bearings too).

I do this because of the environment they get exposed to, and because the OEMs are usually not too generous with applying grease here, and in the steering head / triple clamp bearings.

I know the 14R swing arm bearing are sealed needle bearings, but I'm wondering if I need to pay attention to servicing these, on this street cycle?

Thanks.

You'd need that special 4 prong jam-nut remover tool. A hex wrench or weld a mm nut to a bolt so you can torque that back on, then torque the jam- nut without moving the center collar. That's all about not cracking the frame like the engine has a pre-torque setting so you don't split/squeeze the frame.

Yes, there are 4 needle bearing, 2 on each end, and a narrow looking sealed ball bearing sunk in one end next to the needle bearing set. Could you get a finger or wad some grease on the bearing side and catch those roller bearings? Yes. Is the other side easier to grease without the sealed bearing being there? Yes. Can you pack the sealed bearing? No.h
