Hi maverick a bunch of us go up to scotland every year we have done all sorts of routes up one way down the other but ,honest any of the roads are just great, cant give too much away you never know who may be watching.....if you know what i mean. Do you go for a gentle ride round or is it a bit more than that, any prefernce on where you would stay?

I went many years ago, loads of great roads, a favourite day out for me was from Fort Willaim where we were staying aound the NW tip, stunning roads and scenery and a bit of everything.

Notes may not be so accurate, it was over ten years ago!

1. A82 Fort William - Inverness on the A82

Nice and flowing with sweeping bends and a run along the banks of Loch Ness - the Loch Ness visitors centre is a quick detour, so we had a poke around before moving on.

2. A9 to Tain, then get on teh A836 and follow it past Lairg before bearing left on the

3. A838 to Laxford Bridge, around here it will start getting narrower in places I think.

4. Go Left on the A894 and follow it to Ledmore - Time permitting there is a loop using the B869 and A837 that I think had some great views out to sea.

5. From take the A835 to Ullapool, from here the A836 opens out again and takes you back to Inverness.

Locals may know more, I think during the run you go over the highest piece of road in Britain and at one point there is a long winding moutain descent with a big lake \ loch at the bottom - we did this engines off and still used lots of brakes - and overtook a few cars!

With the exception of leaving UK shores I think this was one of the best biking days out I ever had.

Other roads worth considering are

1) A82 south of Fort William - particularly through Glencoe to Altnafeadh. Stunning scenery.

2) The Pass of the Cattle from Tornapress, Loch Kishorn, to Applecross. Be warned - some of the hairpins are quite tight!

3) As a supplement to Rasher's excellent suggestion, we've also done the Lairg to Tongue road. Sutherland has an amazing landscape - utterly desolate.

However, and this is a big however, you'll be in midge season. If you've not experienced Scottish midges before have a google and find out how obtrusive they are. You can get a midge forecast here. TBH if I was going to Scotland in mid July I'd keep to the east side. There are still nice roads - Deeside to Braemar and over Glenshee is one.
