Engine rattling
07/31/09 4:08 PM

Went for a blast with my mate last night on way home at the traffic lights I noticed this rattle from the engine even with ear plugs in.
Got home checked oil level,fine.
Its done 3500miles and was new 1st March and properly run in.
Booked it in next week at Earnshaws fearing the worst.
Got a weekend trip up Scotland on the 14th hope its nowt major.
I had a similar problem years ago with a CBR600 which turned out to be a cam chain tensioner. But this is proper noisy.
Any ideas.
Cheers

Hi, Jim.

There's been quite a bit of discussion about this type of thing recently. You might try a search on "rattling" using the forum "Search" function and follow the threads found there, or you might post your question in one of the more heavily trafficked forum areas if you don't get a response here. -bg

Mine rattles for a second or two on start up. A couple times this noise has persisted. A soft throttle blip or two made it go away when this happened. I bet it is your cam chain tensioner. There might be some oil circulation problem to this part.

Mine, too. I thought I would try AMSOIL next oil change to see if it helps, as others have said it did for them. Using the Rotella oil now... -bg

Panic over there was a bolt missing and the manifold bolts were loose. Probably not checked at the first service.

Glad you found the rattle, Jim. Are you talking about the header nuts? My header nuts have never come off but i have found them to be in need of snuggung up a few times. The heat causes them to loosen, apparently.
