Kitty likes to walk under the desk, marks her turf with the side of her mouth on the phone jack, turns around and stops between my hands where she wants to be petted. Sometimes I'd catch her mid stride as she's walking to the phone jack. I'd stop her where my hands would rub her neck, then down to her shoulders and massage them, go back up to her neck then she'd walk out of it. I've been doing this for months. Usually I have my hands down and she walks between them and I usually let her keep walking to the wall.
Today she stops where my hands are at her shoulder blades, gets a little for a second or two and I did and didn't think about it at the time. She comes again later in the afternoon and this time she stops and is waiting for me to start in as if her hind legs are between my hands and stands all day for those rubs.
Too bad I couldn't rub more pussy between my hands. It's all about the rhythm with these ladies.

Got a cat 3 houses down. I see him going for the mail, and scoots under the car. I turn around walking away from the mailbox, and he's sitting in the middle of the sidewalk watching me walk away. Cats are territorial so he jumps over the wall and I see him sitting in the shrubs. One day my cat was coiled up at the back door, and when I opened the door, here is this cat under the chair just squatted by her. My cat scoots in and her tail was so fluffed out it was a sight. So this fat cat keeps showing up. Last thing I want is to take my cat to the vet, so I sucked the cat into visiting on a daily basis.
I leave some dry food out in a bowl. I walk up to the window and the cat gets spooked seeing me. This goes on for a few times, then he lets me watch him eat with the door closed. Now, I'm down face to face with the cat, still having the door closed. I can't say for sure, but tonight the cat might hear the bike go by and before I could take my jacket off, here is the cat at the back door meowing.
This feeding has been going on for awhile, so tonight I slide the door open, keep it open, get down and laid the bowl down, he came up and starts eating. I'm just talking to him and slowly extend my hand out touched him while talking. I stopped, slid the door closed, and let him finish eating while I sat down to eat myself. I'm taking the slow approach. My goal is to sit on the chair outside with the bowl between my feet and start petting him all over. He backs his rear up and sprays the patio chair just to make sure he letting everyone know this is his turf.
Here are a few shots before he jumps over the wall and goes back home.

Saw some other rescue dogs on other posts so I'm putting mine here too. Hope it is OK, not trying to hijack the thread away from rescue cats.
Photo is from 1981. Scoop was found running loose in a park in Seattle. He had no tags or identification. No one claimed him in the animal shelter. Fortunately, he found his way to me. Of the 5 Dobies I've had he was the most gentle. He loved to play with the two boys, 4 and 5 years old, who lived in the house across the street.

Big boy gave out a hiss and is still spooked some. I've sat outside and had him come up to the bowl, gave him a few scratches and went back inside. Grabbed the phone and had a little conversation this time around.

Looks like you are making progress.
For it to come up to you and give it's belly up shows quite a bit of trust.
It also didn't get too anxious with you petting it while it was eating.
I'd say with a bit more time and positive reinforcement you can get it to trust you even more.
Is it a stray? Or just someone else's that roams your neighborhood? Or do you know?
Pretty markings for a stray.

We had a Rally one time and rode the Shady Valley area(Hwy 421 The Snake). We were basing out of Johnson City.
A stray dog came up and a buddy started feeding it and the dog hung out with us.
My buddy ended up taking the dog home with him.
10 years later and he still has the dog.

Funny you should say that. She started pooping on the rug so I knew she plopped again when she ran out of the room. I picked her up, never spanked her, just let her front paws drop to the floor while I shoved her head as close to the runny mess, then placed her in the litter box. She never pooped on the rug since that lesson. Smart little shit'er that she is.
Big, no stray. He lives a few doors down. Been a couple of years already where I go for the mail and he's sitting watching me under the car. Or he sits on the sidewalk, hides when I walk by. It's gonna be strange he starts following me and the owner catches us in the act.
He wasn't around for a few days. This morning I walked out without any food to see what would happen. Actually, he's a good test subject to see what he eats and rejects. Rejected the dry food so I threw that away.

He/she comes over just now. This vid is still loading. I go out, go thru his/er routine moves. This time [didn't cam it] I was finding what rubs or scratches sh/he likes. Once they stop in their tracks and like something... now we deal with another routine... so says my cat. Then the old lady comes out and the cat gets spooked, and I'm hearing that hiss. Breakout the food behind my back and we both go in to let Big eat up and jump the fence is the routine.
He/she moves around too fast, nor do I want to hold onto that cat just to check, so Bigboy for now I guess. My only clue is thinking he backed up to spray and no male sack when he does roll around on his back. I added a few more cuts to steal your minutes you won't get back.

Don't worry...he's around somewhere.Maybe he's being kept inside.
"he does roll around on his back"...he trusts you.Cats won't expose their stomach unless they do.They also mostly like head scratching, under the chin,on the sides where their glands are at.My one cat let's me lay my forearm on her stomach while she lays there almost asleep.Priceless!.She straddles my arm.Kinda like..'m k.I know nothing can get me while you're here'...probably NOTHING what she's thinking. But she does have a way of looking up at me when she's laying there that's pretty darn sweet.

I'm sure they keep him inside now. Yes, he'd kick his front legs up so he'd head butt my hand. Then I wanted to see where he'd stop and let the petting begin. So I'd grab him under his neck [like you said] and rub his neck like my cat likes. He'd stop and then I'd start scratching the top of his back, and when he walked to the chair to rub his face to mark his turf, he'd come back around, go under my hands and start all over again.
What I fear is going for the mail one day. He's out in front of his own house and comes up to me. I'm busted! They must know their cat runs from strangers. So I almost figured out what he likes and now he's awol.
