Going out of my mind...why did I buy a zx14r during winter
01/12/15 11:52 PM

Since I have received the bike (a month ago) I have ridden it maybe 6-7 days total. Cold and bad weather has kept it in the garage.

I have performed the following:

Stripped all plastics to verify any possible damage
Replaced upper headlight fairing plastic (small crack)
Replaced well nuts in upper side fairing with nuts that are less stubborn
Sourced a pillion cover, well nuts and hardware, re-installed
Thoroughly de-greased and cleaned front sprocket area
Thoroughly cleaned and lubed chain after every 200 miles or so in those short rides (motul cleaner and gear oil)
Removed rear wheel, cleaned and cleaned sprocket
Downloaded and backed up PCV build from previous owner
Inspected exhaust system
Drain/filled 2x all three reservoirs (brake brake clutch)
Broke oem and replacement clutch slave spacer, ordered an "unbreakable" unit made from delrin 150, couldnt break it
Cleaned/Lubed clutch pushrod
Replaced right side rider peg (feeler was broke off, cheaper to order junk yard peg)
Cleaned and lubed all pegs with lithium moly
Cleaned and lubed controls with lithium moly
Ran a good amount of dry slide in throttle control cables
Set suspension front/rear (minus rear preload)
All inspections from manual done except steering stem play inspection
Removed and cleaned OEM air filter (vacuum, wet, dishsoap, wash and spray out, air dry)
Vacuumed out air box
Set chain slack
Ran remote USB for PCV under the seat
Lubed/cleaned rear axle
I'm sure i'm forgetting something here

I would like to use my mightyvac on the hydraulics but I used it so much on my BMW project car last year its starting to fall apart. Right now i'll just drain/fill until I get that unit replaced.

I have some synthetic bearing grease, I plan on repacking the front/rear wheel bearings.

I noticed the VooDoo exhaust appears to be higher on the right side than the left side, but there is no bent metal, its all mounted correctly. Maybe its just how the exhaust looks. While I like to blip the throttle on downshifts and bark gunshot loud flames out...its really way to loud. But then again, cars stay way away. I followed my wife to work one day and she said when I was anywhere near her car she could not hear the stereo.

The bike spins up to 11.5k, i'm going to assume the previous owner flashed it. However, it doesn't hold the last KTRC setting. When set to OFF, reload the bike, it goes back to setting 1.

I'll have to pull the map off my NAS and upload it and see what yall think, supposedly it was dyno tuned professionally but you know how people are.

My question is: What else could I do during down time for this beast (nearing 10k miles)? I'm not going to pull the plugs just yet, i'll wait until I do a valve check late 2015 or when i'm near 20k miles. What other cheapish maintenance or low cost mods can I do. I weigh a lot so maybe some clutch springs or something similar?

Lube throttle cables and levers...or I spose you did that already?

Inspect brake rotors and wheel runout with a a dial gauge..

You must have a nice, heated garage.

1. Keyfob wise the ECU is not flashed if it defaults to 1 not Off.
2. Pack the steering bearings.
3. Drain the fork oil and replace.
4. Clean/inspect the front wheel bearings and pack the seals. Wheel bearings are sealed so no lube there.
5. Lube the front axle from end to end.
6. Replace the coolant and mix a 50/50 blend or 75/25 of coolant to distilled.
7. Work your way from the lower front end hardware and work all the way up and back looking for loose hardware.

Go watch TV or something, you'll wear the bolts out the way you're going.

All very good answers. I do prob just need to sit tight and quit fiddling until it warms up here in a few more weeks. But yeah the filter cleaned up very well :)

I ordered EBC 10% stiffer clutch springs, clutch cover gasket (oem), a front stand and some other doo dads I don't remember. I rode to work today (30 miles one way), it was 35f and wasn't bad.

Last year I rode through the entire winter everyday on my Concours 14, down into the early 20's and ice. Never a good sign when your traction control light flashes when going 55mph in 6th in a straight line on a flat road. Of course the connie had better wind protection with its robot grandpa shield.

now that its back in the 40's i've been riding daily. Burned through 2-3 gallons in less than 10 miles....pretty much full throttle for 7 of those ten miles.
