Should I Get A 2019 ZX-14R or Wait For A 2020 ZX14R?
07/31/19 10:20 AM

I'm really tempted to jump out the window and buy the 2019 ZX-14R, but something tells me the 2020 ZX-14R may come with a change, like a digital tach & dash like all the latest sports bikes. Does anyone know or agree with me? Thanks

I doubt it will change at all until the year after there comes a new Hayabusa which may be never.

When the liter bikes start making the torque the 14 does, then there will be reason to update it. It's already beat in the hp department or at least equalled by smaller bikes.

the national Kawi dealer here is letting current zx14r models go at a 30% discount...
would take this as an indication that there is a new 2020 model coming up

What a local dealer is doing or not doing is no indication of anything. Carrying stock like this costs money every month. They need to move stuff to stay in business.

This bike has been king of the hill since 2012 and is still competitive. The target market for these bikes is older guys getting off litrebikes and wanting something more comfortable, with no performance sacrifice.

Honestly, with no new direct competition in the pipeline from Suzi, or anyone else and the Kawi investment in the H2 SX/SE, it would indicate to me the ZX14R's days are numbered, period.

I'd wait for the 2020 ZX15R.

I don't think there will be any "new" ZX-14R. My local dealer tells me that big bore sportbikes like the ZX-14R have fallen out of favour. The big market now is "adventure" bikes - even though most owners' "adventure" is still on a paved road and even though a 450 - 550 lb "Adventure' bike for offroad use is ridiculous (How you gonna pick it up out of a rut or sideslope after it falls?). The lightweight sportbike market (425 to 450 lb / 1000cc trackbike replicas) still exists, but it is not a "hot" market anymore. And big displacement engines have a hard time meeting Euro 4 standards (which is why the ZX-14R comes with thoser bazooka size mufflers and the Hayabusa has been discontinued).

I am personally astonished at how well the ZX-14R handles (once moving, NOT when needing to manhandle it around a parking lot or garage), but a lot of my friends' first reactions go something like "Oh wow, that's a BIG and HEAVY bike!"

But we are the minority. That's why there are so many non-current year model ZX-14Rs still for sale all over Canada and The U.S. It's in fact why I bought mine - I got a GREAT deal on my 2017 in early 2019. With that recent sales track record, why would Kawasaki invest the big bucks to bring a brand new big-bore model to market?
