My tyres are flat in the middle
01/17/17 7:37 PM

Hi Guys
At the moment my 2013 has Michelin road pilot tyres on it and they have a big flat bit across the middle.
I do a lot of free way riding to and fro work.

Is there a better tyre for highway use that wont go all square and wear out in the middle please.

I used to hear Continental Road Attacks wore very slowly.

The short answer is no. They will all do it eventually. The softer the tire, the faster it will show up.

I'm running the Michelin Pilot Road 2CT's which I've been very happy with, as Nastynotch said, all tires will do that. I've gotten 26k km on my last set of Road 2s probably could have gone further but was the end of the season anyways.

I can't tell from the picture if you have the same tire or the Pilot Road 3CT's but if you're running the 3s I'd highly recommend checking out the 2s as according to Michelin's web site they are "very long lasting" as opposed to "long lasting". I can tell you the sides stick well enough to put the pegs down and while I avoid riding in the rain I have never had and slipping from these tires.

The tires at 26k km had a serious flat profile at that point but in my opinion, a flatter profile basically equates to harder turn ins (requires more effort to lean the bike over) which I never really noticed until I put new tires on as the change is so gradual its not normally noticeable. Technically you would also get a better contact patch for stopping/starting in a straight line but I generally ride em until they hit the wear bar and I check over the tires when I oil my chain to make sure there's no damage.

You could always just mount a car tire on that bike!

You don't mention how many miles you have on that tire.

If you say 1-2k then that would suck. If you say 5-7k then
that's not bad.

The 2CTs are still a soft tire centre and softer on the shoulders but, I too report very good results in high powered bikes. I've used them on my 07 GSXR 1000 I used to tour all over the place and they performed better when squared a bit compared to other tires I've used. There is a new set on my ZX14R that came with it and I expect they'll be ok here as well, even if the porkage and torque of this bike is higher.

I installed Pirelli Angel GT. After 6000 miles, I can see the center section is bit flat but not bad yet. I do a lot of freeway riding for commute.

I put my 4th set of tires on at 11,500 miles. Factory tires then, Dunlop Q3s,then Angel GTs ,and now Pilot road 4s.

Another big from me for the PR2's. Was recommended them by my tyre supply shop even though they had the more expensive PR3's (and now PR4's) in stock and I intend to stick with them while ever they're still available. Big motorway/freeway miles will eventually kill the centre of any tyre though.

This is caused by either a rider not taking enough corners... or in some of our cases a rider having no corners to take. Yes, I'm a sad panda. Just a couple of roads... is that too much to ask?

Basically you can think of it like this. The center section of your tire is going to wear out whether you use the side tread or not. So even if you had more of an "even" tread wear edge to edge, you'd be about the same tread depth as you are now... maybe a little more (nothing you could see) center tread because the tire spent a small amount of time more wearing side tread over the same miles.

piken,

While I'm not an expert and I know others who have done the same thing, I remember reading/hearing about how mounting a car tire on a motorcycle is a really bad thing. I believe it was mainly due to the construction of the carcass of the tire, the difference in forces that a car and motorcycle tire is subjected to, obvious cornering issues.

But I do find it a bit frustrating how a $600 set of tires can only last 6,000km (stock BT16s for example) which is why I'm sticking with my PR2s.

pegscraper,

I asked my shop about the PR3 and PR4s, basically their advice was "ain't broke don't fix" if I'm happy with the PR2s and not planning on riding in the rain a lot (where the PR4s are supposed to be really well built for) or changing how I ride then just stick with the PR2s.

Had a friend of mine that used to run his bike exclusively on the track, he was suggesting that we trade tires so he can wear out the sides and I'll wear out the middle! :) Although in principle sounds like a great idea I'd rather have confidence in my tires then save a few bucks.

pilot rd2's are a good tire... but the rd3's and 4's are an upgrade tothe same tire.. i've not ran the prd2's,,, but have entensivly used the prd3's and prd4's.... the 4's are a much better tire giving better road feed backand tire life over the previous in my experince... i commute over 500 miles a week and 300-400 miles on the weekend on twisty roads, i have ran them on my old 2012 zx14r, my 2013 zx14r and also on my 06 zx10r... on the zx14's i've gottenover 10k miles out of the tires...on the zx10 i expect to get more as its a lighter bike... plus i also use it as a trak bike so I run it harder escially when back road riding. My buddy on his BMW s100rr regually gets 10-15k out of the tires... commuting and twisty riding.... We both do roughly 10k - 15k miles a years worthof riding on our bike

also you need to monitor your tires air pressure... zx14r depending on your weight and bike mods and tires air pressures should be, my experience zx14r : donlap q3'3 ft-32-35 r-36-38, bridgestone bt16, bt20,bt21 ft- 34 r 38,

michelin pr3's, pr4's ft--38-40,, r-42... i have found that the pr3's/pr4's since they have a stiffer side wall that you need to run higher air pressures depending on your riding style and weight.... ft- 40-42...r- 42-44
I'm only 180 lbs suited... so mod ass you will

If you really just want Mileage, you can look into a Cruiser tire like the Metzeler Marathon or different model...Pretty hard compound. Also, Pirelli Night Dragon. They just won't be super sticky in the curves...

Something else to consider when riding a high HP bike, is how hard you hit the "go-button" when passing or accelerating hard. Having first hand experience with dozens of different tires, doing wide-open-throttle passes eats the center of your tire quickly.
