What's a fair price for my '07 14?
08/09/17 4:31 PM

I've just decided I should sell my '07 14. I need to simplify my life. The bike has always been impractical for me and I think I'm doing the right thing. I thought I would ask you guys first what a fair price would be?
I'm the original owner. 20,000 easy miles. Believe it or not the bike has never seen 9,000 rpm's. Garage kept and even parked inside my office at work for it's whole life. No riding in the rain. The bike looks nearly new. Literally the only blemishes are a few very small chips in the front fairing and some light marks on the tank from my jacket. Rear tire is nearing the wear bars.
You can see most of the mod's. Polished/powdercoated wheels, Area P's, ceramic coated header, hugger, fender kit, Cox radiator guard, Gen-mar 1" risers, smoked screen, black out hardware, etc.

What would be a fair price? I appreciate your help.

A dealership would sell for about $6000. You probably would have to wait a long time to come close that figure selling it yourself...which is not a bad thing because you'll probably come to your senses before long.

To tell you the truth, if I really wanted to sell my 08 within a couple months, I'd be asking $3000 firm. NO BS. If they want it for less, maybe but I take all mods off. You're in the same boat but yours is more appealing because the mileage is lowish.

Someone who was looking for a nice example at the time you are selling would probably jump on $5K, $6k seems to high for a fast sale and as Rook said $3-4K will attract interest.

Sure is a nice bike, sorry you have to sell ....

Rook, I know what you mean about coming to my senses. I get really attached to things. My GS1000 is 38 years old. I love my 14 and I certainly don't need the money. It's hard to justify owning it anymore.
To be honest, the bike is 10 years old now and I just don't think I can work on the bike as will be needed in the future. Just reading through the factory manual troubleshooting section...computer issues, fuel injection, sensors, more sensors...I'd like to say I could try to fix those types of things as they come up, but I think it's too much for me. And since I hate the thought of taking the bike to a shop and trusting the work will be done right, I don't see another choice.
I just looked at Craigslist and CycleTrader to get a price range. CycleTraders info in their ads is commonly screwed up. A few 14's that were "similar" in year/mileage/claimed condition were about $4,500 to $6,000.
Rudy, thanks for the reply.

Is it better/worse/doesn't matter to a) leave the tires on there that about worn out and use the "this way you can put the tires you want on the bike or b) put new tires on there

I'm asking more in general, not necessarily in this specific case.

Nice bike btw, black's always popular.

And btw, unless you absolutely look the part... don't bother with the 9k rpm line. I'd be more apt to think you're lying out your ass! LOL what's "looking the part"? I don't know exactly, it's definitely not old we have 70+ yos that drag race here. I guess to say, the 9k rpm thing isn't going to sell me the bike.

Vic, I was just trying to give an idea of what I meant by easy miles. If someone believes me or not, oh well.
I've never hammered the bike in 1st or 2nd gear. Not even anything close. The bike simply accelerates too hard for my liking. I actually bought the bike on looks, with Kawasaki reliability second.
I enjoy 3rd gear acceleration but by the time it's around 9K, you're going too fast to stay alive.
The fastest I ever took it was an indicated 160-162 on a wide open highway in Death Valley. That was fast to me because I was riding a GS1000 for the previous 28 years. I never did look at the tach at 160.
That's part of why I need to sell it. The bike is wasted on me.

Thanks Kofla for the prices.

Perhaps a different viewpoint will give you something to think about. I owned a 12R for 10 years then traded it for a Concours 14 (thinking it would be more comfortable and age appropriate :-) ). I was wrong, I missed my 12R and to top it off, I had an argument with a guard rail which totalled the Concours.

After a year of healing up, I spotted an 08 14 with 9K Km (thats 5,600 miles) and snapped it up. I am not a racer, I rarely go 20 mph over the speed limit and I do not do "track days" on or off the track. So why do I need a 14R?

First, it is a lot like the 12R I had which I really liked. I love the torque both for acceleration and engine braking. Also, on twisty roads, I drop a gear or two and feel I have great control.

I also own a harley which I ride when riding with the wife and her harley. Ask me which bike I prefer to ride 10 out of 10 times...

Your 14 looks really nice. Maybe you should keep it for another 10 years and see how you feel then...

Although motorcycles have broken my bones, they have greatly improved my quality of life. A fair trade...

You are probably getting close to needing to change brake pads. If you skip the valve clearance check, it is still unlikely you will ever have a problem. Throttle bodies sync is just if you want to do it. CHange plugs , oil, air filter, battery and theres' not a lot else you have to worry about. I think it's a great street bike. It goes slow very nicely and if you need the power you still have plenty even at low rpm.

If I had the space, I'd love to own a second Gen1 ZX-14. If there's one I'd pay $6000 for it would be yours, KAK. we've communicated on the forums since 08 and I know you've been light on the old girl.

Thanks so much for the replies. The last two replies make me want to keep the bike. It's "just a bike" but man, I feel like I'm trying to make a life decision. It's hard. I'd still have my '79 GS1000E and if I get another bike I'm thinking of either the KLR 650 or the Suzuki DR 650. Quite a change. At my age and my history of keeping things a long time, one of those two bikes would probably be my last. But like ahhlou said, I may miss the 14 despite the poor fit with how I ride.
At least I have a good idea on a fair price now. I'd probably ask $5,500 and see how it goes. Thanks to everyone who offered advice.
I'm going to make a new topic that I hope will help me make a decision. I'd appreciate any contributions any of you may have because most of you have more experience with 14's and similar bikes. It will be about living with an older bike and what to expect regarding reliability and maintenance costs. Thanks.

Do you think of this as "my 14" or is it more like just a 14. This matters because some of us think of things in that "my" way and some of just think of it as a 14 we own. Kind of like Hub, doesn't care what color he buys because he's going to remove the bodywork anyway. I personally don't care about "my 14"... I think any 14 would be great.. it doesn't have to be "my".

A few here have swapped bikes only to come back probably not all but many have. The differnce was they really were actively riding theirs and wanted to try something different I guess to improve their riding enjoyment. You don't really seem to like the bike in terms of ergos and maybe even power, which is OK.

You could always buy another one, probalby in similar shape for around the same price as you'd be selling. Unless this is a "my 14" situation where it's like you'd have to find this one and buy it back or something.

Good points, Vic. If I sold "my" 14, I don't think I would feel it was replaced by buying another bike even it was a 14.
