Well, On the Couch
11/09/20 5:47 PM

Regular viewers may recall that last week, my 90 lbs of muscle and no brains Dog ran into me from behind. Dislocated my kneecap. Which wasn't a huge deal because that knee has been out many times, although it's been good for the last 15 or so. Today the knee was feeling really good.
Well today, he and the puppy were running around like lunatics. I was keeping my eye on them. They beelined towards me. I tried to evade but no luck. Major knee dislocation.
After I got done sniveling in the dirt, I found a stick and tried to hop home. Leg buckled twice. I ended up crawling about an eighth of a mile.
Prognosis- dislocation and fractured tibia at the knee joint. Looks like surgery next week.
I think we're gonna have a trainer come in and get Bayek to calm the Hell down.
So, no more riding this year. 3 month recovery ahead after surgery.
So I'm sitting on the couch in a leg splint loaded up with pain killers.
My wife, as always, has been a saint. Poor girl is going to have to haul the firewood and everything else.

Yeah, since I retired in June, we moved to our house up here in the snow line. It will be the first time I haven't ridden year round. Just got an earlier start at the layup than I expected.
I'm hoping that, after surgery, ill be able to hobble around better than now. At the present moment, if I turn wrong or cough or tap my toes on anything, it makes my eyes water. I'm NOT crying, I promise. But the old Binky I found helps. Lol

UPDATE
I heard from the orthopedic office today. Appointment this Tuesday. Then hopefully they will schedule surgery. This will make 8 days since injury. At least the pain is way down...
Or it was until the SAME Dawg walked right into my foot. ( remember, his eyesight sucks)
At least this time he looked sad when I screamed.

Your pooch is a bruiser for sure. I can see where he could cause major damage.
Something similar happened to me almost 40 years ago with my first Doberman. I was letting him run in a big elementary school playground. It was night and pitch black. I could hear him running flat out straight for me. I amazingly had the presence of mind to at least turn away from him. He hit full on at the back of the knees and knocked me ass over teakettle. He kept right on going as I laid on the ground. I still remember how it felt, getting so completely knocked off my feet. Since I was still young I got up and walked OK. Today it would be a major problem.
Here's wishing you a complete recovery.

UPDATE
Just came out of surgery. It went well. No nausea or anything afterwards. Even had some dinner. Knee is pretty sore but not too bad. They are putting me on Percocet. They're keeping me overnight and I go home tomorrow. The only real issue is I seem to have lost some of my wits....so I'm a half wit now.

Thanks for all the support.

Back home now. Dr Herring is a genius. Went in through the side, aligned and plated the break,
cleaned out the bone chips, repaired meniscus. And I have virtually no pain.
I took 1 Percocet with dinner. The entire staff at Mercy Hospital in Redding were just outstanding.
Especially our night nurse Whitney. Great bubbly personality and very helpful. So was virtually
every other member of the crew. I'm feeling really good about how things are going.
2 weeks rest then back to see Dr Herring and set up a plan. I do know I can't have ANY weight on
the leg for 3 months.

Small world but don't feel too special Mad.

My wife Linda recently had major ankle surgery (no accident but fixing up a very dickie ankle she's had for years) and is non weight bearing on it for 6-8 weeks so I guess she is a little better off than you and your 3 months.

Not good you are out of the game for a number of weeks Mad, but look at the bright side.
At least you don't have to do what Im currently responsible for which is being the full cook, cleaner, dog walker and feeder, shopper, washer, transporter, waiter, worker, all around slave, and anything else that is required.

Lucky I have a keeper of a wife (Gen1) or I would have traded her in for a younger updated model (Gen2) when all this started 3 weeks ago.

Mmmmm.
When I put it like that maybe the thought is worth a re-visit...

Yeah Yannih. My poor wife has to do almost everything this winter. Firewood, snow clearing, shopping, cooking. She's ex Army so knows what it takes , but it's going to be hard on her. I'm looking into getting someone to come help.
I am a very lucky guy. My wife is my best friend for sure.

Latest Update
Saw surgeon today. He told me that my knee was VERY messed up. Multiple fractures, meniscus was the worst he's ever seen. He cleaned everything, repaired the meniscus and put in a plate that runs from my knee almost to my ankle. Starting stretching and range of motion exercises. Ill post pictures tomorrow.
Dr Herring was very proud of his work and for good reason. I'm lucky to have gotten such a good doctor.
