Mount smartphone to windscreen? Ideas?
02/14/16 7:48 PM

I custom made a nice, tidy smartphone mount (see pic) that snugs the device down very close to the steering stem, which is nice looking since it's unobtrusive ... BUT ... it's too far down for me to see! I need it up higher in my view.

Anybody have any ideas for maybe mounting it right under the lip of the windscreen?

... or maybe up against the bottom of the windscreen down by the gauges?

Don't wanna block the gauges, but may be no choice?

Thanks for ideas!

You might have a look at TechMounts latest products. They had a mount that bolted to the master cylinder bracket that goes on the handle bar. This steering stem mount works great except it ca be very VERY hard to remove from the hole. DO NOT use silicone or other lubes--NOT necessary NOT helpful--orings will swell--need to remove front fender, insert dowel and tap out with hammer--only safe way to avoid damage to mount and steering stem nut--no prying. If you get the steering stem mount, I'd suggest not pushing it in all the way to the top o-ring (there are 3) or if you do, remove the top o-ring or at least remove the mount asap. No lubes though. That will backfire on you.

^^ Oh, there are extensions you can buy to raise the mount. You can buy as many as you want and attach them together. Probably be very steady with just a small phone on it even if you raise the mount all the way to the height of the windscreen. I'v used an extension about 3" long and the GoPro filming is still shake free.

Not to take away from the thread but I have a question Rook. Do you know what the jello effect is with regards to vibration an video speed? The reason I ask is that I made a stem mount that was strait and slid into the stem and locked into place. I was wondering if you were getting that effect with the mount you are showing or if the O-rings absorbed the vibration. My mount was a little to long maybe because I was looking to get the camera view above the windshield and that may have amplified the vibration over a shorter mount.

Thanks Rook. I'll look into those. I was kinda hoping there's a mount that secures to the windscreen, or the windscreens mounting bolts, to avoid the look of a big tower supporting the smartphone way up in the air ... will see what I can come up with. Those windscreen bolts are prob not strong enough to rely on, but I'll take a look.

david5525 - The mount above in my first post uses the steering stem hole; see parts list below: It's a threaded rod that extends all the way thru the steering stem and is held in the center by rubber grommet like inserts I stumbled up at the hardware store, that just happened to fit perfectly. I have not used it as a camera mount, but from looking at the phone there's no vibration. The rubber seems to do a good job of dampening.

I checked out the TechMount site. They have a lot of different mounting solutions. I am still curious about their stem mount that Rook showed and if it has or is susceptible to the Jello effect. When you view a video play back with this problem it isn't vibration like a shaking camera but a wave or distortion caused when the shutter speed and the vibration frequency go in and out of sync that you can see as a moving distortion on stationary points like the edge of the windscreen.

OK some of these TechMounts look pretty good. Such as this Fairing Mount: http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=detail&product_id=8

But I'm now thinking the stalk in the steering stem hole might be best, because I might be able to look around it to see the gauges when needed. HMMM ...

Nope. No jello effect. Here is a vid using the ~3" extension that you see in the busa pic above. The road is kind of rough after the narration by Guido. I don't see any vibes in the video. You would might get some shake filming with an 8"+ extension but for viewing a smartphone, I think it would be just fine. It would look a little weird but I think it would work fine.

Also this one with a small wheelie on the rough road in my old neighborhood. You can see the bike jars over the bumps but the camera is steady.

Extrapolator, looks good where you have it now. Clean, out of the way, and in an easy place to read.

Rktsled - But I can't see it! OK, I can see it, but as you know sometimes when looking at a GPS you need to look at it for a while ... and tilting my head down that steep for an extended period, well, that's not good. It needs to be higher up in my vision. I just need to figure out if there's a decent way to do that, that works well, doesn't block the gauges too much, and looks at least half decent.

I have a bar clamp mount (EZ with a 7/8" bar conversion) that mounts the phone pretty much at the top of the steering stem. Since I normally use a paper map and only use the GPS function of the phone to find something not on the map. I don't really need the phone up in my face any more than it is. Blended trifocals allow me to glance down at the map and then back up at the road without much head movement. Not sure we really need any more distractions as I probably have too many already. They do make tank bags with GPS/phone pouches on top that can be angled for better view, but the more you pile up in front of you the more likely you are to obscure something (gauges). Bikes with larger fairings (C-14s, Harley Road Glides) have a lot more area for distracting devices and farkles than a ZX-14. It becomes a matter of how much crap can you pack into your field of view?

I have two ball mounts on my bike. I removed the front screw on the tank, got longer screw, used flat washer underneath the ball mount and then tightened it down. Now I can use shorter or longer mounts to put camera, phone, or GPS at any height I want. I also mounted a ball on my clutch clamp, now I can mount two different items if I choose. For the tank ball I bought on of those spring loaded X clamps that adjust to any size, works great and will hold GPS or phone, super secure! Installed 12 outlet in upper left side of fairing and took power from light so it is switched, that works great too.

When I got the ball mounts the inside diameter is to large for screw, used JB weld and put bushing inside so everything is snug.

I made a mount with my 3d printer.... could make pretty much anything mount to it since its a GoPro mount, or custom print whatever mount needed. I tested these at over 120mph, and sent a few out to some drag racers for testing.
