Questions on wiring a manual fan on my 14
08/02/09 11:09 PM

I'm just going to wire my 2nd fan directly of the battery with a switch so I can turn it on and off manually. Do I need a relay or can I just run the wires off the battery with an inline fuse? Any help from the electrical guru's would be great

From BATT goes the fuse side - Other end of fuse wire is a wire out to the toggle leg going in - Toggle leg coming out is this - Wire on toggle leg goes out to Fan side leg of the male/female end is whatever is the connector end - the fan leg or male/female end of Fan connector goes to - Ground.

Make sure you pre-test connectors at the fan, so the wires at the fan's two wires are not crossed so as to run the fan backwards into the radiator. It needs to pull air thru the radiator fins. So, that slight swap of wires at the fan connector is the only hang up.

Next, would be the switch and if the off is on, then you swap those legs or the wires [meaning] on the legs of the toggle. No, no relay is necessary if the fan is rated at 12v.

See if you understand the wire layout? All you did was take both wires of the fan's two wires, placed one wire on the (+)side of the battery and the other wire on the fan goes to the (-) ground of the battery. This is 12v and you can test the fan that way.

All you did was place a fuse and a toggle in-line on the positive lead from battery to the one fan wire. The other wire from the fan completes the circuit to ground.

Hey Hubster thanks for the advice I just went ahead and got a switch with enough amp capacity to run the fan on its own, and am wiring an inline fuse. And thanks for the suggestion of checking the fan direction before I wire it in, that could be very easy to overlook lol.
