FUEL PUMP
01/02/17 11:50 PM

So I have a 07 ZX14 with about 8k miles on it. Ive noticed on cold days and wet days my fuel pump doesn't turn on. I have to put the key to on and off a few times, or wait for about 5 minutes and try it again. Ive checked the fuel pump and it is fine, the relay and its fine. I did get a bad reading from the ground strap under the seat. I cleaned it out and thought that was the problem, but its still doing it. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas anyone its driving me crazy. And again its not doing it ALL the time. Ive just noticed it on cold and wet days.

It sounds like an electrical problem. Maybe a bad ignition switch or kill switch. Since it seems to be weather related maybe pull apart all the major electrical connections and clean and grease them.

My guess is the relay box, you said that you tested the relay however did you test it while it was having the problem? How were you testing the relay, did you measure the voltage from the pins, the pump or did you do the tests that the service manual specified?

Although unlikely, have you checked your battery? Is the voltage good, are the terminals tight and the ground from the battery to the frame good & clean? Does the bike still crank but just not fire up?

I'm assuming that you have determined that the fuel pump isn't working based on not hearing the pump noise when you turn the key to the "on" position.

When I had the bike apart my father had whats called "The Hook" some type of electrial tool to read the voltage and everything else. Not sure exactly but we tested the fuel pump and relay. And to be honest before i had my fathers help i just purchased a new fuel pump and relay because i didn't want to deal with it lol but its still doing it. We also switched out the pumps again and sure enough when i put the old pump on it. The pump didn't prime up. So its doing it with both. Also like i said the bike will do it when its been sitting for a bit. Then after i try it and wait 5 minutes it primes up. I can not seem to manipulate the problem.

Even with the kill switch on or off it does it. I got the wiring diagram for the bike and I'm thinking maybe the ignition switch, or one of the joint connectors.

Also could it be the PC5? The previous owner installed it, and i noticed when the fuel pump primes the light on the PC5 goes on. Maybe the guy messed it up?

The POWER light on the PC5 should go on when you turn the ignition ON. I think the STATUS light may blink for a while too.

Not saying this is it, but what does the ground cable look like at the negative battery post? A flashlight aimed down the battery might show white crust built up around the ground cable. Any acid buildup seen?

The PC5 changes a lot of things, in addition to checking the battery ground terminal like Hub suggested you should also check the PC5 ground, they're the source of a LOT of problems if the ground is connected poorly. Also check all of the wiring harnesses off of the PC5, specifically the main/big harness, that thing was a pain in the butt to properly seat when I installed mine and I think I had to use a pipe wrench to apply enough force to get the thing to fully seat.

Give the harnesses a solid tug, if they come apart then the connectors weren't seated fully.

The one and ONLY! Ta-daaaa!

I am in the process of a major photobucket overhaul which will remove just about every photo I ever posted here including the tutorial pics. If you ever need a tutorial and find the photos are not showing, just PM me and I will get them up right away. Did that for a guy last week.

Yes, FCOL i have to use a bottle opener to get mine apart. There really should be a special tool for that thing. If you press them together hard and hear/feel a small click, there's a good chance they were not fully plugged together. I would hope the contacts would be all touching by the time you here the catch click. That seemed to be fine for mine.

Checked all the grounds and the PCV connector. Still has yet to do it again, but then again I haven't ridden that much due to the weather. Im at the point where I have given up if it does do it again, but I want to fix the damn thing!!!! Drives me crazy
