Brake fluid change
04/13/19 6:06 AM

Hey all
I had noticed that the fluid for the rear brakes was discoloured after 2 1/2 years of owning this bike. Probably due to the rear being the only hose that is rubber. 2016 SE. All other lines are steel braid. I decided to change the fluid in all yesterday. It could not have been any easier! As my username says I am a Ford technician by trade. I hooked up my vacuum pump with reservoir and just sucked out the fluid and kept putting new in until everything was clear again. It is a Mityvac Siverline that I bought probably 25 years ago. It took maybe an hour and a half to do the brakes and clutch. No spilling fluid even though I had rags wrapped around the reservoirs in case.
My old bike I did every year......this one is going to be the same. I am pretty sure that the Mityvac is fairly inexpensive to buy. When finished flushing always give a couple of shots as if you are bleeding to be sure.

I agree about the Mityvac. Makes it far easier! I have not needed to do the ZX-14R yet because it is brand new, but I did a VTX1800 with it and it made it very easy.

Hey Jim
FAR easier especially considering all the plastic painted parts that could easily be spilled on. Removed the front sprocket cover today...another area to be careful of!! Remove it and push the piston back as far as possible and then zip tie the clutch lever to the bar...….or the piston may pop out and all your fluid with it. After doing the front sprocket clean up I had to do a quick vacuum and rebleed of the clutch.

Hey Rook
I am sorry to see that! Like I said I think mine is like 25 years old. As a side note a quick google search
I found a service manual for 2016\2017 ZX14R on Brock's server. That is where I found the info on the slave cylinder.

I have C-clamped the slave cylinder in. No way it can pop out then.
