What to do?
06/30/11 7:42 PM

I have an 08 zx14 I purchased new from dealer about a month ago. I have never owned a bike like this before. I havent yet received my owners manual. I have already put about 500 mi. on it. Any info on what to do on servicing would be appreciated. Also, when I park it, some oil and gas drops from the drain tube on left side by shifter. Is this a problem I should be concerned with?

Mine dripped when new a couple of times, it was a result of initial servicing. If it doesn't go away, make them find it and fix it under warranty.

You don't have an owners manual? Man, I'd rip my dealer a new one if they pulled that stunt on me. First service is at 600.

Download the shop manual and parts fiche in the General section of this forum, tacked at the top. The manual is a bit out-dated, but the service intervals are accurate enough.

Welcome!!!Good choice on crotch rockets!THE BEST,Anyway...you should NOT be getting ANY drippage from ANYTHING.PERIOD.Couple of questions then....1)are you filling the fuel tank past the filler neck? And if so,are you letting her sit in the Sun afterwards? This will cause an overfilled condition occasionally.Dangerous as well.2)You're seeing "oil" in the tube? Are you sure it's oil?(and how much?)Or just fuel sludging up in the line.Doesn't sound earthshaking, but you do need to get it corrected ASAP.Have them check the breather tube(or you can yourself). If that's obstructed, pinched or something, you could have a serious pressure problem starting to emerge. You don't want that my man. What happens when you open the fuel door to fill up?Anything strange, like vacuum pressure or anything?A slight "rush" of tank air is normal.Long as it's coming OUT of the tank, not going in.

Do you have a California Model?Could be you need to have the canister checked...make sure the lines are clear, not pinched at the tank/frame interface.Canister's got to be free of sludge as well.Hope ya get er sorted soon!Ride safe on yer Rocketship!

Thanks guys for your info. Dealer doesnt sell many bikes. They sell mostly jetski and fourwheelers. It is incredibly hot here. The tank is usually full most of the time. The spotting just bothers me because it is new. The dealer is getting me a manual asap he says. I drive it to work almost everyday and it is about 90 mi. round trip. I park on the concrete sidewalk. After about an hour or two there usually is a small spot about the size of a fifty cent piece by the stand. I checked on it several times and found some dripping from a hose with a small reservoir in the line. As I stated the line runs down the left side by the shifter. Thanks for info on 600 mi. service.

I have not noticed any rush of air when I open the tank. The spot smells like gas. As I said it doesnt drip untill it sits in the sun for an hour or two.

The spot on concrete is not that large. It is 2 or 3 in. in diameter.

She's breathing...sounds like to me...HOWEVER....I'd watch sitting her in the Sun like that. You SHOULD be getting a whistling sound from your tank...even if she sits for a few minutes in the Sun with a fill up.THAT's NORMAL.(usually right after riding...the tank's venting through the cap). There should be NO overflow going into that line.Only if you overdid it while filling. Here's what you CAN do...just to see if things are okay(and I don't recommend this but just once).Fill your tank.Past the filler neck.So it flows(a little bit)into the overflow opening tube.Enough to get fuel running out that tube below. You'll see it.Just don't go crazy and fill er till she flowin like a stream or somethin! And do not start your bike sitting over that puddle.Move it away from it.Give it a few minutes to evaporate from any possible draining onto the pipe or fairing down there.See if that's the same consistency of your previous "drippings".You didn't say,but IS your bike a California Model? The EPA canister and all can have some issues concerning venting and stuff IF it gets fuel overflow into the canister.
