North Carolina 2017
09/28/17 1:56 PM

Me and 3 buds just returned from this past weekend's trip from FL to NC/TN and back. Me and my ZRX bud trailered ours; 2 FJR buds rode theirs.

Fri Drove to Morganton GA to sleep at ZRX friend's inlaws' house, ~10 miles south of the GA-NC state line.

Sat morning rode north to Tellico Plains (west end of the Cherohala Skyway), ate lunch then rode the Cherohala west-to-east to Robbinsville (Cherohala's east end); I forgot how big and fast its curves are YIKES. Then north on US129 to Deal's Gap (east end of the Tail of the Dragon). Poked around at the Deal's Gap resort for a bit, then tried to ride the Dragon. Made it thru just a few curves, came around a corner and found traffic at a stand still: Accident of some kind. Dunno what; too many cars to see ahead. Being a Saturday it would've been very busy even without the issue of an accident, so we decided to u-turn and go ride other roads and come back Sun or Mon to ride it. So, east from Deal's Gap on 28 to a brief stop at the Fontana Dam. Then on toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, rode the little western segment of the BRP and made our way to our hotel in Maggie Valley. Maggie Valley is a good central home base to hit good curvy roads in different directions.

Sun morning rode the BRP north to lunch in Little Switzerland, rode 226A south out of LS until the good curves ended, u-turn and ride 'em again the other direction back to the BRP. West on the BRP ~10 miles to Hwy 80 aka The Whip (it's got 3 very tight 180's within about the first mile, and many other great curves). Made our way northwest on blah roads to Hot Springs, stopped for a beverage, then rode south out of there on the Hwy 209 aka the Rattlesnake back to our MV hotel.

Mon morning checked out of our MV hotel and rode the west end of the BRP west to Cherokee, then 28 west again to Deal's Gap. Most riders musta been back at work: Dragon was clear! So we rode it there-and-back ... so 318 curves in 11 miles ... TIMES TWO = 636 curves in 22 miles! Ha! Yeah ... I was gettin' tired! Ate lunch at the Deal's Gap resort, then headed back to the Cherohala to ride it east-to-west this time back to Tellico. Gassed up, rode back to Morganton to east/sleep.

Tues morning loaded bikes on trailer and headed home. Sad

The 4 bikes ... Left my side cases back at the hotel in Maggie Valley since we stayed there 2 nights.

extrapolator--what a great ride! All great roads--in many places, NC 28 is as challenging as the Dragon.
Was any fall color showing yet? Still pretty green here in N GA---
Thanks for the report---
Paul

Thanks Rook and chrly! It sure was!

Hey Paul - Some leaves here and there were turning, and a few here and there had even started to fall. Not enough to cause traction problems though
