cam chain tensioner
08/14/17 8:32 PM

I got/get cam chain noise as the engine warms up, usually from 2000 to 3000 rpm, I have about 9000 miles on my 2015 zx-14r (abs). I use full synthetic Kawasaki S4R 15W-50 oil. The noise sounds a bit like valve train noise but it isn't (because it's not over the entire rpm range). The noise started around 6000 miles and has been getting noisier, and me more anxious. My riding style is "sport" cruising, I enjoy riding the bike (when I get the chance), I do not beat the bike.

After searching through the Internet, others reported same problem, the common cause appears to be the cam chain tensioner. Armed with this knowledge, and the fact that I have the extended warranty, I made a warranty claim to replace the tensioner. Kawasaki approved the claim in "less than 24 hours". There is a new part number replacing the old part number cam chain tensioner. The dealer tells me there is an issue with the cam chain tensioner on both the Concours and zx-14s (same zx-14 engine) and the issue appears to be an inadequate design that results in some rather disturbing cam chain noise and owner anxiety. The quick approval by Kawasaki and new part number suggests it's a known issue and the new part number is probably a redesigned part. Maybe the brand new bikes have this new part number in them, mine (the 2015 zx-14r) does not appear to have this new part (hence the noise). In any case, a search through the web will reveal that others have approximately the same symptoms as I have had, all related to the cam chain tensioner.

The process of replacement is in progress, waiting for part, etc... Will let you all know how it goes and will try to compare old versus new part and report in.

I know some of you had same problems and solved it by ordering a machined zx-12r cam chain tensioner from Carpenter Racing. It's not a factory solution but Carpenter Racing is a reputable outfit that knows what is doing.

It looks like a factory solution and an American made solution are available. I am going to try the warranty solution (for now) because I have already paid for it... but I will be ordering from Carpenter just in case. I'll let you know how that goes.

Just wanted to share this info with you, especially those of you who have had the same problem.
If any of you have had this issue, I'd like to hear from you,

All the best,
Johnny.

Thanks for the new info, Johnny. It's bout time. This has probably been the most complained about ZX-14 quirk since the bike came out. if the updated part is like the old one where the head cover must be removed to release the CCT spring, I would not let just any shop do that minorly invasive procedure. I WOULD take the old one off myself and swap for the new part but I doubt they will let anyone do that. In any case, if this is an automatic tensioner like most are on all bikes these days, it's less safe for severe use than a manual. I'd just pay the $60 and put an APE on. Anyone can install and set a manual tensioner.

It's good to see the couple rough edges are getting rounded off of the 14. Heat, crankshaft bearings, CCT, suspension, flies....I think they pretty much hit everything now. I'm not sure they will ever get rid of the heat though.
