New 08 SE, need to mount Valentine 1
06/15/09 10:50 PM

Hi all

just took delivery of a left over new from the crate 08 Special Edition, have only done 60 initial miles so far, most of that in the rain. I am 54, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, haven't been without at least one street bike since I was 16, and this ZX 14 is the slickest of them all....

I have on order GIVI V35 hard bags and mounts, a Zero Gravity Touring Screen, GenMar bar risers, the 3M complete protection package from TheTankSlapper.biz, a centerstand, passenger grab handle, etc. This bike should make one hell of a sports tourer.

I also have a brand new Valentine 1 radar/laser detector, and am trying to figure out where to mount it so it can still "see" behind the bike for radar/laser as well as up front. The Techmount, Ram, MountGuys mounts seem mainly intended for the top fork mount center, or clamped to the bar, and I need to get the Valentine 1 out far enough that my body is not blocking the rear facing sensors. I was looking at maybe trying to find/fabricate a mounting bracket to attach the Valentine 1 maybe to a fairing mirror stalk on the right side.

Has anyone figured out how to mount a Valentine 1 so that both the front facing and rear facing sensors could both still work? I have both the remote visual display, and the remote audio output, so don't need to be able to reach the detector, I can control it remotely. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Paul

I don't have a good answer...
Personnaly, I'm going to mount mine somewhere inside the plastic and not worry about the laser.

Because laser doesn't bounce (reflect) like radar and its such a narrow beam that by the time you get a positive detection you're most likely busted.

Hi Dennis

well, the Valentine 1 also "looks" rearwards for radar, apparently the only detector on the market with that feature. In my car the Valentine 1 has warned me of moving radar from the rear as the police car moves through traffic, although anything trying to catch up to me from behind on the ZX 14 may be much less of an issue....... :-)

Hi Paul,

I understand - I'm just saying don't worry about laser cause you're popped by the time it "detects".

Once you decide not to worry about front and rear visual access (for laser) you realize that radar waves will travel through the plastic or you - so you're pretty much free to mount anywhere not obstructed by metal and won't loose radar sensitivity.

I would mount high with minimal metal between the unit and the front and rear - they make handle bar mounts and others that go to the top of your fork tubes etc. "Tech Mounts" is a name I remember seeing (this is not an endorsement) - check out some of the BMW and or sport touring sites and you'll see a lot more mention of these sorts of mounts they talk about them all the time over there.

I've seen what you mean for mounting stalks on the beemers that put the unit out by the mirrors for full rear site line.
maybe modding one of those, or fabbing one yourself might do the trick.
I have a Escort 9500i mounted behind my windscreen, it still picks up most of what is behind me even around my fatness....

As far as laser goes I'm getting a laser jammer next to deal with that problem.
