Engine Ice
03/21/18 2:55 PM

Hoping some forum member has the dope on Engine Ice coolant. The marketing says it keeps the engine running cooler than regular glycol type antifreeze / coolant. Anybody have the scoop on this? Who runs it? I know some tracks require this or wetter.

I've never heard of a problem using it. It's designed to cool the hot spots that might not be contacting coolant. If your coolant is filled properly, there should be no air bubbles and the coolant contacts everything. I've never used these products though. I would use Engine Ice instead of Water Wetter because Water \wetter is an additive and it could get confusing how much you put in and you probably don't want too much in there. Engine Ice is just a coolant. You drain the old coolant and pour 100% Engine ICe in there as I understand it.

Yes that is my understanding as well, the empty out and pour in bit. Now a guy at the local bike shop gave me a cryptic warning about water wetter i think along the lines: "if you dont flush out every bit of the old coolant, this stuff gells up from it and bad stuff happens"
I really only care if the engine ice truly keeps the heat down more than regular coolant. The jug saying so is not quite enough to pull the trigger.

There are many non-glyco coolants out there. I use Maxima Cool-Aide.

ICE is just over priced in my book. If they maybe they sold a concentrate I'd probably buy it
and mix.

Keep in mind ICE and other non-glyco coolants require annual coolant changes.

Most non-glyco coolants do not have any freeze protection. ICE does have
minimal freeze protection.

The best coolant you could use is "Water" it will transfer heat the best.
Coolant actually slows down heat transfer. but.. water would be bad of coarse,
unless you add some lubricants for the water pump and some inhibitors to thwart corrosion.

That's pretty much what these non-glyco coolants do and then they add a "Surfactant"

Surfactants are the reason the claim to cool better. Regular coolants can "hyper boil" under
the extreme temps around the cylinders causing air pockets, surfactants help basically making the
water more sticky, spread out, cling to surfaces and not cause air pockets. Soap contains surfactants which help
them clean better.

This is why some manufactures simply suggest adding to your regular coolant.

Regular coolant "will" raise the boiling point of your coolant which is good a thing,
no boiling, no air pockets.

I do not requite any freeze protect, so as long as the non-glyco mix has some lube for the
water pump and some type of inhibitor I'm good.

Not much a reason to switch to non-glyco unless going to the track. Usually novice class
won't require it anyway, but it's still a good practice for when you slide your bike
down the track you don't screw up everybody's day while they try to clean the track up.

If you want better cooling, longer maintenance interval, you could mix regular coolant at
a reduced mixture. Doesn't have to be 50/50. Reduce mix to freeze protection desired, thus
more water in mixture, better cooling.

Water boil point 212
pressurize system to 15psi boil point raised +15 (boil point 230 degrees)
Regular coolant boil point raised +15+/- (boil point 245 degrees)

Give or take on the above numbers.

PIKEN!!!
Thank you for that. All makes perfect sense. I love the reduced mix bit. Good sound logic.

It may be fine but along with reduced freeze protection, you will also have reduced corrosion protection. I've always gone 50/50 Kawi Alumacool coolant/distilled water as recommended and I have no visible scale come out. A few specs is all I have seen and that might have been paint chips from the radiator fittings. I'd say of you're not having heat problems, spend your effort elsewhere. I never had a problem with heat at my track days and one was in midsummer. It's 15 minutes at a time and then you shut down.

I used Engine Ice and also Water Wetter(different times).Followed the directions.I saw VERY LITTLE temp drop with either one.Only a few degrees.

Gonna put some MoCool in my H2 coming up.Made by Motul.Works with the current coolant in there. We'll see how that does..though my H2 runs quite cool actually.Definitely nothing heat related with her.(or anything else;) )

ROOK!! Agreed. I use the Honda coolant. Works just fine.
GRN!!!
Thank you for the input. Have not seen Mocool yet, gonna check it out. H2! How do you like that beast so far? Are you riding that more than anything else? BTW, I Love Montana! My favorite state to date. Worked in Gillette for 3 yrs. got to loving skiing and hunting around the Big Horns. We would go up through Biddle around Belle Creek and hunt prairie dogs. Amazing place, tip top good times.

Love me H2.Haven't ridden my 14 since early 2015.Took her out...got about 10 miles down the road.Turned around and switched out.Haven't ridden her since.I know...flame on guys.Gotta do what ya gotta do...am I right?lol.

You can find MoCool on the brock's website,or probably Motul.SUPPOSED to be pretty good. We'll see this year.
