Hotbodies Undertail
09/14/19 12:54 PM

I've always liked the look of a finished undertail and hotbodies has their ZX14r undertail on sale. I ordered one back in June and when it came in it was the wrong green (the lime racing green - not the Blaze Green on my '17 ZX14r ABS SE). Contacted them and they had me send it back to them (they paid shipping) - took until this week to get it back. Turns out this paint is nearly impossible to match according to a custom painter I know. They tried several times and got it as close as they could. If you look at where the panels meet closely you'll see it's not quite the same but being under the tail in shadow it's not really noticeable most of the time.

I had to trim a little in a couple places (where it fits around the tail section frame), create holes for the mounts for my saddlebags, and open the push rivet holes a bit. Lastly, I made a couple holes in the bottom of the stock plastic for the nuts holding the brackets for the license place so that they weren't creating a gap below the brake light.

I can't see any difference between the color of the under tail and the OEM panels. Looks great!!! The whole bike looks very nice!

In person you can. The factory paint has a lot of what I'll call sparkle because I have no clue what it is. The undertail does a little but nothing like the factory paint. I'm thinking about getting a full set of carbon fiber bodywork and leaving it bare everywhere the paint is black (except the tank obviously) and paint everything else green and if I do that I'll have the undertail repainted then.

I used a flashlight along with my camera and was able to catch it in this pic. Upper left is the factory paint on the tailsection.

Oh yeah, I see it now. Still looks great if you ask me. Kinda looks like it's supposed to be that way.

Can you paint CF? I was told NO. I'd leave it all CF. Paint actually adds up in weight pretty quick. Seriously, you will have a lb of paint on the bike easily if you paint CF.

I asked mdi carbon fiber about it and they said no problem. It's more about looks for me, I want it to look nearly stock and almost not register what it is for a few.

I want some BSTs for my busa but I really like the look of the black OEM wheels. Might consider painting them if that is possible. They are so expensive and all for weightless though. Kills me to add weight to $4000 wheels!

I might try a vinyl wrap although that seems like it could cause some real problems on wheels at high speed.

We had a wrap on a blown alcohol drag car I crew chief'd a few years ago. It stayed on at 196 mph. But it's not for long each time lol! It seems like it would be a nightmare to wrap a wheel. I'd ask BST if it can be painted. MDI is where I'm buying mine so that's who I reached out to.

I'll have to do that. Yeah wrapping would be tough. No way you could get it all on in one piece.

Ive installed on my Gen 1,,,
I went beyond, causing a not so nice fitment,, Still looks great.
I covered the topside of the undertail with teflon barrier tape, causing an improper fitment..

WAAYYY Easier to clean than oem ugliness
Also have a CF HUGGER ON
