Mysterious engine cut out
05/08/23 6:59 PM

I have a 2013 zx14r with around 20,000 miles on the clock. While on a longer ride with friends in the wilds of WV I ran low on fuel and while making my way to a station the bike did this random cut out. Almost like one hit the kill switch for a second. The check engine light lit and the bike returned to normal running. I associated the issue with low fuel. Once refueled I started the bike and no CEL. I ran the bike home and the random cut outs happened again over the next 100 miles. Kinda scary. Between cut outs the bike runs normal, has no loss of power, it always starts immediately, and really has no misses. Engine temperature and speed don't seem to have much effect, although the longer I ride the more frenquently the issue presents. I have never gone much more than 20 miles since the original incident because of my fear of tow trucks. The check engine light comes on with the first cut out, but disappears with every restart.
My first guess was the fuel pump or filter due to the conditions of the first presentation. I replaced the filter (really cruddy) the pump and the regulator. I jumped on the bike thinking problem solved - no joy!

Questions:
I cannot seem to call up the codes for the CEL. It appears that the ECU does not recognise some faults (per 3-32 of the shop manual). When I try to access the self-diagnosis mode per the manual all I ever get is the English / Francais menu. Am I doing something wrong here, or will the menu not appear without a check engine light (which goes out once the bike is turned off).
It now sounds electrical to me, but why the increased occurance with longer rides? If anyone here has experience with similar problems or some ideas where to begin looking, please chime in.

Thanks

The code should show on the screen. Have to keep the key on. Key off dumps saved code and clears with key back on.

I'd check for battery acid build at the ground side of the battery. That will also show how much integrity you have if the bolt went loose. So pull battery or shine a light and look for corrosion.

"Magnetism: You cannot separate heat from the chemical reaction." Thus the acid powder build on the cable leads. If it did move to a chemRe, dip the cable in vinegar until it stops bubbling, rinse with tap water, use dielectric grease on the bolt and nut as well. Even dip the nut and bolt if contaminated.

That is a pre-screen you cleaned or changed. The ultra micro screen is to get that long black filter cartridge, it comes unit complete and not separate.

Thanks Hub, Grounds and wires were my next investigation.
Regarding the CEL code, I cannot get it to show up on my screen. I turn the bike off, turn the key on, the lights including CEL all illuminate then go out except oil and neutral lights. I press the SEL button for 2 seconds and the English / Franscies menu appears - no codes. What am I doing wrong?
I will jump on the battery this evening and report back.

Nothing. That says there are no codes. So when a code is not set, SEL is not going to show it. Instead, you see the language menu. Therefore, it flies the phantom-code.

The self diagnosis would display the code number on the dash if it was hard set. Just turning the key back on alone would show a failed sensor, wire, etc. Since there is nothing to hunt for as far as a failed signal going in, meaning, the trouble tree of short, open, disconnected, it's sending in a good signal. What could you look for?

When was the last time the plugs were changed? Manual say every 6,500 mile.

Well, I pulled the battery covers to start my exploration of the electrical system and find the battery connections are clean. However the bolt connecting the ground cable to the frame was loose ??? I tighted it up and went for a nice long ride without issues. Thanks, Hub, for the advice.

Sounded like a ground problem... that momentary loss and kicks back in again. No, thank you for the exercise. Proves this bike is beyond bulletproof being out in the field this long.

Not a fan of the factory lead ground location, but it works. That's what came to mind. Probably good thing to add to annual checks/fastener inspection.
