'swat I was thinking. Perpendicular to the floor bike, cold check, oil circulation runs back to the crankcase except the filter will stay wet = correct reading. Still, those early spring/late fall air temp swings have a real effect on the cold check level, I think...at least in WIsconsin.

Here is a tip I use for checking the oil level - I use a telescoping mechanics mirror while I sit on the bike holding it level - it works great! I used to carry it with me in my tank bag, but after 18000 miles and zero oil usage between changes, I leave it at home in my tool box.
I have checked the oil level when the bike is on a rear stand and it reads WAY low - do not be fooled - check it sitting level.
