Cooling System upgrades

What upgrades have you done to improve the cooling on the 14?

Thanks

Not done yet but have extra fan assembly waiting to be put on. (since turbo install) I can't say if I 'need' it, but will do as Summer 'precaution'.

I'll be adding header tape to the exhaust and redoing my auxilary fan since I found out from other members I need to put a relay in to quit popin' fuses!

GP on the wrap. I think I am going to do that was well, since it arrived last week, though I have heard since then that it will stain the pipe!

Ceramic coating the header is easily the best thing you can do to lower the engine temp and lower heat coming off the motor. You can do all the other little tricks. But all of them together don't equal the benefits of ceramic coating.

I'll second Bud's comment. Thermal coating the header is the cure for an 06/07. Drilling out the cat then coating the header for the 08/09.

and the things you all and others said, faster ramp up to RPM, lower engine teme, etc, also applies if the bike has a turbo on it and that header is ceramic coated or wrapped?

Perfect I was thinking of the thermal coating on the header and the Muzzy Al fan. The bike cooks my legs in the summer heat.

He asked how to make it run cooler, not become airborn...LOL. Actually I'm sure everyone knows that a turbo is the way to go if you have the money. But if you don't want to spend 5 grand, ceramic coating is way better then anything else. Wrapped headers are just that...wrappped. It's cheap and does a good job. For about two days. The truth is. I think it looks like crap and doesn't last at all, in less you know how to put it on better then me. LOL. Caramic coating costs about $130.00 to $150.00 and looks better and lasts a lot longer.

Sigh....

I guess I will be off to find a coater for the turbo header, instead of wrap.

Is there a benefit to coat the exhaust pipe as well?

Not really, remember coating is "Coating" so the more things you coat, the harder it is to put things back together. I just "Ceramichromed" my header. It looked great and lowered it heat.....way lower. This is one of those things. Once you do it, you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier.

JDC I don't think it would make any noticeable difference to thermal coat your pipe. But it would if you did the turbo. I know several people, from 750turbo.com, that have done it on their 750 Turbo's. And I know Blue coated his turbo for his 14. The pictures he had on the old forum looked really nice as well. I can not say if they did the insides of the turbo. But my guess would be no. But yes on the inside of the header. I remember a debate on the old forum about it restricting flow if you did the inside of your header on the old forum. But the coating is so thin it would be insignificant in that respect. And even if it did restrict the flow some tiny amount the benefits would outweigh it.

+1 on the header coating!

It not only helps keep the heat off, but the ceramichrome looks great! The stock, stainless header, looks like crap after a couple of months of heat/cool cycles.

How much does it cost to coat the header and midpipe??
Where is the best place to have it done??

I would say check locally. There are shops all over that do it, and it might save you time and shipping charges. If you have a spray gun and a big enough oven you can even do it yourself. I know at one time you could buy it on-line at Eastwood Company. A buddy of mine did his own for his 14 after I bragged so much about it.

Just do a on line search. That's how I found one here in central Illinois after Phil suggested it. I paid $140.00 for the chrome finish. Mine was header only.

No, he did it in a regular size electric oven. Bought a used one and installed it in his shop. Don't think Momma would let him use the one in the kitchen like Blue did, LOL!! If you stand it up on an angle it will slid right in. He is the same guy that did almost all of my powdercoating. Used the same oven to cook the powdercoating on. For a backyard machinist he does some AMAZING work!!!

That's got to be a lot cheaper to do it yourself. I'd think it would pay for the oven first time. If it were a used oven, of course.
