Gearing
03/29/21 9:29 AM

My 2012 came with stock gearing which is 17/42. When I finished farkles including the BST wheels I decided to try
17/44 gearing. Big mistake at least for me. 1st gear was unusable at full throttle. 2nd gear the bike spent all the time with the front wheel 3 ft. off the ground and that was full power ktric 1. I believe the bike would stand straight up if ktric was turned off. I changed the rear sprocket to a 41 and it is much more manageable. Still will pull the front wheel in 2nd but much more manageable to ride. For the drag strip I think a 40 rear sprocket with the stock wheel base will work out. I have not had the bike on a dyno yet but I expect somewhere around 205.

I think it's getting about time for me to get a Gen2. I just don't see how the Gen3 busa is going to beat the 14R even after it's derestricted.

Well I think the new busa looks very nice.Lots of new styling updates.Hate to say it,but the 14 looks dated. Not bad or anything.Just dated. And that new motor,it's strong.Just get some add ons with it,maybe a flash and tune?IDK.Who cares really whether it'll cream a 14.They're so close anyway.Gotta go with the most comfortable one IMO that performs like ya want and fills that need.I'm thinkin that Busa handles better than a stock 14...looks like it.

Actually 13 years since the Gen2 busa. I just had to wait to see what Suzuki was going to come up with. Unless there's a surprize waiting in that new busa, they made the decision easy for me.

The new motor will probably handle turbo better than the Gen2 but they went to smaller throttle bodies? WTH? That doesn't sound good for turbo even if the engine is all built.

I care if it will cream a 14! If it can't, what do I need with it?

Yes, I think stock v stock, the busa feels more stable and predictable in corners but somehow, I don't think I corner any faster on a busa. I'm lifting the tail 1" on the busa so it will be interesting to see how that affects handling (if I don't crash). Speaking of gearing, I'm going +4 on the rear with the busa. See, that would be just too much on a 14R if stewart can't keep the front down with +2. My Gen1 14 with +4 on the rear will wheelie in 2nd at pretty high speed. I don't think it will in third. The busa wheelies in second with stock gearing, not in third. The torque is closer to a 14R.

I wish I could put my 16T front back on with no issues. This thing bucked like crazy through the first 3 gears when I slapped it on. It was a monster though.

Since the thread is gearing, I thought I would throw this out to the guys that don't drag race, but do a lot of long distance riding.

I only do long rides, usually 300 mile+, and the occasional trip. My bike is flashed and has a full exhaust. It has so much torque that I decided to gear the bike UP, so the bike would just loaf along. I went to an 18T front sprocket.

Now granted, I am very light weight and I have BST wheels, so that does make a bit of a difference. But with the huge torque, the motor pulls the gearing effortlessly. I honestly don't feel any loss of acceleration above 3,500 rpm. It's a 6% difference. Cruising at 5,000 rpm before is now 4,700. I am so impressed with the long legs now, that I ordered a -1 rear just to see how that will work.

My kind of stuff.
1)Are we saying k-skid was OFF, and still the k kicked in?
2)Are we saying that 4th and the rest; no sign of a buck, or at least say 4th showed nothing?

Interesting.

I'm going with the 3v or the loop of 3 variables. RPM is one, vac at the throttle body, and tone wheel. Only when 'I slap' does the formula say to rpm, you just whipped up a faster 360° at the tone wheel, and load calculates the back wheel spun up so take that!

Maybe rpm and tone are the calc, I'm just guessing. I've felt k on the stones and you can hear the k kick in. I've felt ABS at the front wheel. Felt the stutter or slapping without a sprocket change. Wheelie, not so much if felt it come up I backed off or k kicked in... I know what you mean by the interventions.

Ain't formula fascinating saving your ass in so many bucks. And you can take that pun to the bank.

Hub it didn’t matter if Ktrac was 0 or otherwise. First three gears only it would buck its ass off at part throttle. Any meaningful amount of throttle and I didn’t notice it at all. I put the 17T back on and it never did it again.

Cool. Yeah, low rpm intervention is where all the action is. I'll assume takeoff via wheel spin. Can't be for a wheelie when the front tire is still on the ground and not slowing down. And that set of 3 gears is also a case of wonder.

Then again, 1-3/4/5-6 is 3 patters if we talk map change. Don't know if I believe my own abstract, but that 5-6 is some kind of tre combo, if you believe that abstract.

Like I said, I get a kick out of intellectual property.

You know I have been reading all this disappointment from the Busa crowd over the perceived lack of performance of the new 3rd gen bike as well as mocking from our ZX14 crowd. I have not seen any performance test data yet on the bike and everybody just assumes it will be a disappointment. Myself, I have modified every motorcycle I have owned in the last 40 years including the 3 ZX14's I have owned. The new Busa looks pretty good to me as far as electronics so I will wait for hard test data before judging the bike. I guarantee you that with normal mods it will run with the ZX14R. It will surprise me if Kawasaki comes out with a faster ZX14 there is just not enough demand. Who knows, I have been wrong about this before.

No argument here. I see the GL'ing of refinements. That was a marketing request remember. I have no other hobby but wait for the next fastest bike.

More like a short order cook. Torque out of the hole, the cagers are far behind. Or the in-between the wolf packs where I look way up ahead and head for that empty gap and keep the gap from catching up. Power up if you want to sell it.

Back to gearing. I am now going to put a 40T rear on my bike. ZX9mral mentioned that he is not racing and likes the higher gearing for street use. In fact I found that 17/39 was ideal for drag racing back in 2013. We turned the best et's in the 1/8 & 1/4 with this gearing. You are not going forward as fast with the front wheel 2 feet off the ground as with it on the ground. Just my 2c worth.

What kind of set up motor wise did you have with that 17/39 ? results ? Stock wheelbase ?

chly this was the Brock's 2012 ZX14R project bike Louisville Slugger. I was contacted by Brock to see if I would furnish a new 2012 ZX14R for development of his parts and then drag race it. The motor was completely stock with the exception of shimmed clutch springs. The wheel base was stock with lowering links and the front end strapped. He used the Brock's prototype exhaust for the ZX14R, Power commander 5, CO2 shifter, MR12, flys removed, ceramic wheel bearings, stock chain with o-rings removed, steering damper, 17/39 gearing. The rider was Terron Babbage from Louisville and the best runs were at the NHDRO event at Indianapolis. The bike ran a best time of 8.81 at 160 MPH at that meet. On brock's dyno the bike made 226 RWHP on MR-12. Terron weighed about 150 suited and is a very good rider.
I sold the bike to Terron in 2014. You can still find the u-tube videos of the bikes development by Brock as well as the maiden strip outing at Cincinnati 1/4 mile strip. We had a ball with this bike and Terron still owns it.
