Does the quality of the spool itself mean anything? Some are Billet some plastic some carbon fiber, all different prices. Does it make sense to invest in a better quality spool just to lift the bike for cleaning the chain now and then?

No. Not IMO. I have Vertical Horizon delrin spools and Luckybike aluminum, both very inexpensive. The aluminum will scratch from lifting the bike. I like the delrine better. I have Pit Bull spools on the busa. I think they were a little more pricey but not a bit better and it is lighter. Go with what you like and make sure it is made to fit the rounded swingarm of the 14. That's all you need to worry about. Small spools are a bit harder to get the lifting fork engaged to. I like my Vertcal Horizons best.

Rooks correct, doesn't make much difference what they are made of but the aluminum does get scratched up. When you install whichever spools you buy put a drop of blue loctite on the threads to keep vibration from loosening them up.
Vic got me to using and ABBA stand which is great! With the ABBA don't need no stinkin' spools! Like Vic, now that I have the ABBA would be hard pressed to use anything else. My PitBull stand, which I have had for years, is hanging on the wall in the garage collecting cobwebs!

Couple of suggestions, the bolts that come with the spools might not be stainless, so you may want to look at getting different bolts if you don't want them rusting. Also, put a bit of locktite on the bolt when you install them so that way you don't come back after a ride and find one of your spools missing.
