Stock tire life, need input.
06/18/09 8:54 AM

Just trying to guage how long most peoples stock tires lasted, mileage wise.
We're heading out for a 2 week trip in July, and I can't see that they will make it thru the duration. I've got 4200km on them now and we plan on riding about 5000km on our trip.
I'm thinking of having them replaced in Montana (about 1000km into our journey) and was just trying to see what y'all got from your stock tires.

Thx.

Depends a lot on your riding style and throttle application IMHO. 5000 miles out of my original and 4000 out of the second tire after pulling flies. 8000 out of the front OEM tire. Mileage has been going down ever since, lotsa throtte = short tire life.

Well, I know you're going to hear different from the rest of the crew but I have just over 8000 miles on my stock tires and I still see a tiny bit of tread depth crossing the center in all but one tread line. The rear is way past spent. I'm not recomending you go as far as I have.

I stuck my hand inside my new tire (Bridgestone BTO-16)and I put a finger into a tread line so that I could sort of feel the thickness of the tire from the bottom of the tread to the inside of the tire. I feels to be about 1/8 - 3/16 of rubber after the tread is all gone. That's all I'm riding on now. Never would have guessed it would have been that skinny.

As an insurance, I myself always fit new rubber before a long distance trip if the present tire(s) are more than 75% worn. I do this on my truck(s) and my cars for years. It's totally up to you but for me it's a little more peace of mind when traveling.

"This report is the Truth"!!!1500 miles on my FIRST tire-stock Bridgestone.Pirellis are my tire of choice-moderate wear for my riding style.Performance-I never think(much)about how they will grip(never slipped yet).Costwise, they're cheaper than the rest.

I can see the stock tire only lasting 1500 miles on a no flies zx14. The tires suck and the bike is heavy and has tons of tq.

I got about 4,500 miles out of the original stock rear tire and hit the wear bars. My front is wearing better of course but it'll go when I change. I don't ride that hard. I'm going to try the Michelin Road pilot 2's. Many here have said they're a good compromise tire and I hope to get about 7,000 from the rear. They're expensive so I hope the mileage is much better.

I got 2200 miles out of the stock BT-014 rear before it was all gone.....and the front was so badly cupped at 2500 that stopping felt like the bike was doing the jitterbug. The 014's are one of the most gawdawful tires I've ever ran good thing bridgestones not making them anymore lol. You can still find killer sales on them tho if you're feeling masochistic
KAK the Avon Storms just as good as the PR 2 and is cheaper Conti Road Attacks are also a nice tire with a nice price. They made my busa handle VERY well...they don't seem to be wearing as well as the storms tho. I think my storm rear's gonna last forever.............

never, never, never had good performance w/ a set of stones! rear was toast at around 1400---1600. went back to MICH Pilot Power 2ct. ALLLLLL SOME tires. steeper profile = quicker turn-in. longer treadlife. better (sticky) handling. no complaints with the MICH PP2ct.

I really like the turn in and stability of the Dunlop Qualifiers on my 14, not sure about wear though as I punctured the rear at 1500 miles and had to replace it early. Just guessing but maybe 3000 miles out of one of these. Not trying to derail the thread here but how ya doin Firecombs? We did a nice ride yesterday, north up to St. Jo. Great wide open places with lots of twisty, well maintained farm to market roads up there.

Thanks for the help,
I'm going to order a set of Road Attack's and get them installed before we leave. No need gambling with tires.

I replaced my tires at 3800 miles as my front had a nail in it. My rear tire was squared off and combined with a plugged (temporary) front tire, my confidence was very low.

Current tires are Dunlop Roadsmarts and I love them. I also put them on my C14, a friend's FZ6, and will put them on my VFR soon.

The Roadsmarts wear very well and do great in the rain. The tires may not be the tire of choice for the harder riding crowd, but for me, I have no complaints.

Trikebubble,

Please post here after the trip how the Road Attacks did on ZX-14... I have them on Z750s and love them, but with heavier bike and all don't know how they hold up. After all, they are cheap - but maybe it's just because they sell a lot of them :P

Thanks!

OK, ok. I know it's time to get those wheels off and new tires on immediately. Just hate to waste such nice riding weather but now I have to either do that, or....I could just get a new bike with fresh tires.

My rear tire lasted about 1500 miles. I get on the gas from time to time but don't really abuse the bike and that's the quickest I ever went through a tire. I'm on my second set of Avon storms and got over 7k out of the first, probably could have gotten more but the rear picked up a nail.

On the ZRX site a wise man once said tire life has lot to do with what kind of road surface you run one. Comparing mileage is hard without knowing the road type. Ridding 60 miles each day on a cement freeway I hit 10,875 miles before the cord showed on the stock tires. I have a set of Stradas that are just shy of 20,000 miles and I'd bet they'd go another 5-10. They have squared off and stick like boiled okra, but they been very cheap to run.

Oh and it already been pointed out the I most likey don't know how to ride because I don't swap tires every other weekend. All I can say is run smooth bores for a few year to learn a little trottle control, then switch back to the new fangled CV's and FI, never know you might see a tire last a little longer.

I'm running road attacks on my busa, which is as heavy as the 14, and I love'm. They really sharpened up the handling, and stick VERY well. The only downside is I don't think they're going to last as long as the storms on the 14...which also stick pretty good. For the money tho its going to be really tough to beat the road attacks overall
