What does your 4-2-1 megaphone do for bottom end performance?
08/07/09 11:22 AM

I tried to do a poll on this but I couldn't figure out how to post it. Maybe you guys could just leave me some comments. I'm about to order a $1,400 ceramic coated Alien Head with o2 bung welded into header. I'd love the loud sound and the peak hp. I do plan to drag race some day - maybe this year. I am considering NOS for the bike some day, maybe. I would like to come close to what I would have going with slipons in bottom end performance for street riding though.

Please try to tell me what i can expect going with an A-head when I am riding from idle - 4K. Perhaps expressing the reduction in acceleration by a percentage (if you feel that is the case) would be best way to convey the effect of a 4-2-1 system.

Comments comparing partial throttle with a 4-2-1 to partial throttle with slipons would be helpful also. <<In other words, do you need to open the throttle a lot to get the performance from a 4-2-1?

If you decide to go with the brocks AH Rook you will not be sorry. I get real good power characteristics from this system across a very wide power curve. The few draw backs are sound decibels, and your passenger may not like the system do to heat. When i read your post above about what you intend to do with the bike the AH would be my first choice .................Bill

Thanks, Bill. I've been thinking about which exhaust to choose for over a year so I'm sure I've asked all the questions already. I just have to give this one last check over before spending the money on an A-head.

Some have the opinion that going to a 4-2-1 megaphone will move the powerband up and I believe this is a valid concern. I remember hearing this idea way back in high school when a friend was considerering exhaust systems for his Chevelle. I would think the flat spot that happens way up on top with the stock ZX-14 exhaust could get split between the bottom and the top (i.e., after 4-2-1, you can make power at higher revs so you have a smaller flat spot on top but you now have a bit of a flat spot way down low too.)

I don't often hear complaints about this, however.

Any more coments welcome.

Hey D,I know its not a 14, but the info might still help you. Going from the stock dual exhaust on my busa to the yoshi 4-2-1, I definately lost some low end and a little midrange. I now find it a little bit easier to drop a gear for the power I need rather than rolling it on and having it pull up into the meat of the power quicker. But above 5 grand the new power is a real rush, and for my style of riding the low end I lost isn't a big factor. I think you'll be fine And you're going to LOVE the big ole' juicy hit of power higher up

I'm slowly but surely getting it done Its really turned out to be quite a time consuming job tho...not that complicated, just tedious enough to eat up lots of hours My wife bought me a camera to film the maiden voyage, and with the help thread here I'm going to try and post up the first ride vid so you guys can come along with me as I scare myself silly lol.
