check engine light
08/25/15 9:19 AM

I have a 2014 zx14r (bought in Aug 2014), and a week ago (8/16/15) I got a check engine light (located on the tac). Everything was running fine until this morning (8/25/15) when I pushed the start button and everything on the bike shut off completely. Normally a dead battery makes a ticking sound, but in this case 100% of the bike turned off. I'm going to hook up my trickle charger after work, but since I haven't seen anyone post this issue I figured that I would to save others some trouble and see what you guys have to say about it. Thanks.
FYI- I ride just about everyday, the bike never sits for more than a week when I'm not ridding. I find it strange that after 1 years and 5,000 miles that I have a dead battery!! I had a 2007 yamaha fz1 for 2 years and never had a battery issue not 1 time!

My battery failed exactly like that, but not in my garage. And no amount of push starting or recharging worked to get it going again. The fix was a new battery. Sometimes a battery just shorts out----poof!

1. A current in flow has magnetism.
2. A current flow causes heat.
3. A flow of electricity causes contacts to oxidize.

I cannot do anything about mag or heat, but with oxy I can dab vaseline on my battery posts.
I cannot be sure until you look, but the battery cables might be loose, have that powder around the battery lead post and cable?
I can also think of a direct short if the main fuse blew. So remove battery, note who is tight or loose at the battery posts. You'll see the starter relay parked in that battery housing. Follow the hot cable down to the starter relay. See if the main fuse blew there?

I figured a new battery and a tender was probably going to do it. I've got a friend with a new zx10r tell me that if your bike has ABS and/or traction control, that those will draw power directly off the battery itself. Others say just get a lithium ion battery and I will never see the issue again. "Never again" are words I take with a grain of salt lol.
Thanks for your reply guys!

Did the new battery take care of this issue? can others with 14Rs' weigh in on this issue with the check engine light coming on while the bike is on but seems to reset when you turn off then on again? my battery is over 3 years old already.

Checked the battery voltage and it indicates 14.5 v so plenty of juice. I'm not using a trickle charge; actually never did with the 14R because it's in a climate controlled garage and every week to two weeks I start and run the bike for a few mins so I'm sure that helps. No need to change at all but decided to buy a battery and Deltran charger for future use if I ever need it.

A shorted battery can still show 12 or more volts at rest. Then, when you put a load on it...failure.
Get it load tested.

My Shorai is seven years old and still kickin. Smaller than recommended for the 14, too.
