Anyone tried DIY tinted lenses
07/30/13 10:39 PM

I was thinking about a few mods for my new Black 14R SE. My black 07 got some Clear Alternatives tinted turn signals, and VHT Night Shades paint and a few coats of clear acrylic over the top on the OEM tail light. The tail light turned out a little dark though, because the rattle cans are little clumsy. You can't get a really fine mist with them.
I hear the factory lights are better quality then others being offered. I was thinking about trying to tint my OEM lenses to get just the right amount of tint, and some clear coat over the top.
My question is this: I was thinking about just applying a coat of plastic primer, adding a little black acrylic lacquer to some clear coat to tint it and spraying them with my touch-up spray guns and compressor to get just the right amount of tint. Then applying a couple of coats of clear over the top to seal it. Has anyone ever tried this? Any thoughts, problems or advice?
I even thought about doing it to the inside of the OEM screen

I am waiting for the recipe for this actually. Using a clear coat tinted with black paint, sprayed from a touch up gun. When i get the ratio of Black to Clear, I'll post it up.

Have you tried the smoke plastidip? It looks good and you can pick it up for $7 a can at Home Depot.

Plastidip is totally opaque. Not a good choice for lights if yuou intend to use them,

Any thoughts, problems or advice?

The black lacquer and clearcoat will probably work fine. Do some experiments. If you want to go very dark, a transparent black pigment will work best and that is probably what they use in Nightshades. IDK what pigment is in your black lacquer.

You will not need to go really dark on the directional lights because they are dark on the inside and this will help the black appearance. The winscreen on the other hand might be a real challenge to get as dark as a dark smoke and still be transparent. I think you might as well paint it solid black on the underside. That will look neat and be very dark and most of us do not look through the winsdscreen anyway.

I'm hearin' you Rook. Good advice. I was also thinking if I try it on the screen & it looks crap, then I could just black it out. Same result. I still have my OEM 07 screen to have a crack at too. I'll be getting a ZX DB screen too for long hauls. Maybe that'll give me the best of all worlds. I can pick and switch the look I want, when I want.

Rook and Sweet, What do you boys think of clear alternatives...ie for turn signals?

G'day Wolf. I had them on my 07, except for the tail light which I couldn't find one I liked, so I Night Shades'd it & topped off with clear coat.
Clear Alternatives fit and finish were good. Direct drop-ins. They were nice turn signal lenses, just a touch light for my taste on a black bike, and a little expensive. If you're thinking about them for your bike, they'd look great on the green. They're probably one of the better ones around. I've heard the cheap Chinese ones can leak.
If I can't get mine the way I want them, I'll probably go with theirs again.
