custom machined bar risers with nastynotch
06/24/14 4:52 PM

Been wanting to order some helibar risers, and instead just decided to machine some myself. Not really cost effective, but I wanted to add my personal touch somewhere. Took me approx. 10 hrs but they came out fairly well.
Started with a piece of billet aluminum

trued up both ends to get a solid foundation to work with.

Kind of a blurry picture but here I'm boring it out to get it close to final I.D.

Here is where things start to get interesting because I like to run pretty close tolerances

Here you can see where I've laid out what needs to stay, and what need to go...

Doing some work with a 4"x 1" end mill here. This is what took the meat of the time involved because you can't rush this and I was doing the side radius curves with X and Y handwheels laterally. Really sweating bullets here.

Here's what it looked like after the milling was complete.

Scribed it out for .750" pieces

And here's the finished product. You may be asking yourself why there are two sets here.. Well I wanted to send those to a fellow 14 enthusiast that has helped me out a ton with his expertise on this machine we all love. If I text this guy he responds, call, and he answers. Anything under the sun..no matter what. Cblast, thank you sir, hope these make Priscilla even more of a fantastic machine.

Dam cool. I have helirisers, but I'd grab a pair of yours all day long. Way to go! Me dad was a general machinist (tool and dye).

Thanks Wolf! My dad always told me to learn a profession that will always be in demand so this is what I chose. I truly love doing it. On a side note, damn I take crappy pictures...

Sir, you touch me with your generosity. Those not only look flawless, they are handcrafted masterpieces. I feel honored and proud for Priscilla to be able to wear such excellence. Your work and the product of that work are such that I really don't even have words to properly say thanks. Mad love bro.

I might have to drop my forks in the triple a little and give me a slight hinge change. Steepen that angle slightly by using the vert given by the riser for drop to gain front end feel and quicker geometry. :) absolutely can't wait to try it!!

Nice, I love shit like this. As far as the 10 hrs goes, if your doing something you enjoy then time is nothing. I like to turn bowls on my wood lathe and ten hours can disappear quickly...and that's just for a wooden bowl that I could of bought at wal mart for 2 bucks. At least your stuff is useable. lol

Zx14 rider, I can make those, but the time evolved doing it manually is pretty high vs. Writing a program and hitting the button on a cnc machine that gets it done in probably 5 mins. Thats why you can buy these parts for $75. At normal shop rate for machinist work, I have close to $1000 in those riser blocks. Thats why I just did these just for fun on my time and not company time.

Hummm never machined titanium before. Let me do some research to see if there would be issues. I didn't plan on making anymore of these, but I'll consider it.

I can make that, but its far cheaper to just buy them from a company that cnc's them out. A $75 cnc'd part would end up being $600 for me to do it manually. Just being honest, and that price is just a guess because I wouldn't really know till after they were done.

I bought some Helibar risers and they fit and function and the paint looks good. However, the machining is a bit sloppy with a little gap here and a little overlap there. I tried to fit them both ways, up or down. They are marked "L" and "R" and the marks face up... They look to be mass made and must not be line checked as they go. I'm not unhappy with them, but it's not quite the product that someone like you is capable of or that I truly expected. I emailed them. They did not respond.

I haven't seen the helibars in person so I can't comment on any machining errors. All I did with mine was machine out a mirror image of the entire flat surface of the underside of the clip on base. Anything more or less than that is half assing it. It will still function the same but like you said, it's an error. I dont do errors.

Problem is, no one makes them. If zx10 blocks are the same, i guess the hole could be opened up to match the axle size.

Oh well. Back to triple clamps.

Guys i powder coat parts for a machine shop, he always asks if there's something he can do with bikes but I always say I'll get back to you...

So if u want something I just need a an actual piece or EXACT demisions for him..
He has 7 cnc and about 10 lathes...
I mostly coat manifolds for him...
Only other thing is there must be demand for it as it will cost a considerable amount for 1 or 2 pieces .. But say 20 or more price gets more reasonable...

If there's anything I can do just let me know ..
Here's the main thing he does..
This is completely CNC machined out a block of aluminum..
Adjustable stack throttle body

Couple small pieces

And here are the manifolds I coat for him..

Wow, gotta say thanks to NastyNotch! I worked my butt off today and yet it was one of those days that doesn't yield a huge tangible result. Then I had to drive 2.5 hrs in stop and go traffic. When I finally got home, I was cranky, hungry, and thirsty. And on my counter was a package from my bro! Wow. Talk about changing a mood and puttng A HUGE GRIN ON MY FACE! The quality, the obvious craftsmanship. Excellent. Top shelf bud. I can't thank you enough. I am gonna install em tomorrow and I will post up some pics. These look the shizzle NastyNotch! Thank you!
