To wave or not to wave
06/26/14 8:47 AM

So the other day I'm riding down the street enjoying the weather just cruising and I see a cop on a police cruiser coming in the opposite direction. I throw out the two down signal like I would any other biker while passing, we make eye contact so I know he saw me and he just keeps on rolling without signaling back. I don't know why, but that pissed me off to the utmost! People in VA already can't stand a lot of the cops out here as it is, but someone trys to shows you respect and you just basically say f you! I was so mad, I wanted to pop a u-turn and fly past his ass knowing he couldn't catch me anyway, but my responsible side kicked in and I just kept rolling! Lol so what do you guys do? Do you signal at cops on motorcycles and has some of them not signaled back?

Most cops dont wave back around here, most sportbikes do, except a few who think they are moto Gp riders, usually
On Ducs, who I tell to go race Marquez or Lorenzo etc .. LOL !

Actually some of the harley riders wave too ...

I always wave to a MC cop. They wave back but something in the body laguage indicates a little apprehension most times. I wave to Harleys too. Somethimes they don't respond. Sportbikes, always.

Sometimes I get a wave and I'm about to shift or execute a corner so I don't get a chance to wave back but I try to nod my head, at least.

There was one MC cop I didn't wave to because I decellerated from about 110 as I entered the freeway. I grabbed the brake and he sailed past. Missed his chance. He gave me a real mean look. I suppose sportbikes slip through their fingers fairly often and that's why they don't wave.

You have to make the aborted "wave" look like you were actually just scratching your leg. Seriously, some riders (and some cops) take themselves FAR too seriously.

I've never passed a motorcycle cop , but I'd say only 1 out of 10 people on a cruiser will wave back. I still wave regardless because I'm not an asshole.

I wave to cops regardless of vehicle, me or them. But do i have to wave to everybody else on a motorcycle? I generally always wave back. Where is it stated that I initialize the wave? Should I be waving to everyone while i'm in the car too? There's days I pass 25 bikes in 10 minutes.

That's what 2.5 waves a minute? I think a prom queen in a parade would wave less than that, I don't blame you there.

sometimes the newer scooters look like a GSXR from the front so they get a wave out of me. Scooter riders don't wave back, generally speaking.

My wife rides a can am spyder, hardly anyone waves to her. They must be on the fence about whether or not it's a motorcycle, car or atv. Just as well, shes a beginner rider and gets nervous letting go of the bar even for the brief time it takes to wave.lol.

Same here, I usually do. CHP moto cops try to be robotic, but not all of them. I once had a CHP moto cop come up behind me and we lane shared side by side for a few miles. I guess he trusted I was not going to side-swipe him in the process. You can also modify your wave to a cop and give them a 'salute'. (Just not the middle finger kind).

I rode the NC mountains June 14 - 16 and a vast majority of the riders there waved ... when they're not deep in focus on surviving yet another tight turn on the Tail of the Dragon, that is!

Cruisers, sport bikes, dual sports, motards, no matter, even waving across party lines(!) at each other ... something I never saw back in the 90's. Harley dudes would completely ignore sport bikers.

Anyway, in NC I waved back every time I could, but I actually thought it got a little excessive! Aw, hell, maybe I'm a lil' bit of a Scrooge!

Hey, it's no different all the way over here in Australia. I wave to all, maybe missing the odd scooter and harley rider. Harley riders all have their head up their ass because they are better than everyone else and it's not "tough" to wave. It's hard to pick them sometimes until they are close and you recognize they are just pirate costume wearing tools. It's funny though, I get the odd wave or chat at the lights from them, but only since I've been riding the 14's. Must be that the big 14's put us in a different class (like we didn't already know that) lmao. Sad thing is it's often the younger sport bike riders than won't reciprocate too. Same over here with cop riders. But you're right.... it pisses me off even more given the fact that they are public service workers on MY payroll. Screw them though. Just because they are douche bags doesn't mean that I'll become one too. Wave/nod away I say, and keep up the tradition and comradery that we share. I've been doing it for 33 years, and not about to quit.

Here in Philly i do the "bike wave" as natural reaction to almost any1 on 2 wheels (sport bikes, cops, Harleys.. etc) or 3 wheels (cam am spyder) to show respect to other riders. Of course there are always a few assholes that dont wave back.. and it does seem like most of them are on Harleys. I say f em and keep it moving continue waving at the next bike i pass.

Over here in Thailand the roads are infested with scooters, which I ignore. Hardly anyone wears decent gear (or even a helmet, even though we've got the second-most-dangerous roads on Earth), so unless I'm passing another sportbike being ridden by someone properly suited up (a rare occasion) I don't bother, and when I do wave it's rarely returned.

I usually wave to any rider when I'm back in the States.

I've heard motor cops are trained to not wave. Seems believable.
I wave to them just to see if they'll wave back. Got one to do it up in Concord Mass a couple years ago.

Funny, though, how many riders don't wave, while maintaining the "I'm a badass" posture, showing the entire universe they do not wave to those other than those who ride their particular bike.
Like:

BMW, except it seems the newer batch do wave more

I wave to all 2 wheels. Scooters get no love. Cops I just nod to them. Usually they will nod back. In the twisties Harley riders wave 90% of the time. But in town almost never.
