Hey Rook, I told you before about the Gen 3 Hayabusa my friend has - 2023, Yoshimura full exhaust, Sprint air filter, velocity stacks, Moore Mafia flashed ECU. Earlier this year he put a +2 on the rear sprocket. My 2012 14R had the stock gearing, 17 front 42 rear. We did a roll on race, 40 mph in second gear. As soon as we shifted to 3rd he said I started to pull away. About a month or so ago, he wanted to try it again. He said his Busa seemed to be running stronger and according to him it was finally broke in. We went out on a secluded highway. He wanted to do a roll on from 4th gear. Ok. I'll give you the hit. He took off then I did. He was at least 4 car lengths or more in front of me when I took off. I finally caught him at 160 mph. I was thinking yeah, his bike is running stronger.
He called me the next night and said I have to tell you something. I went down 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket.
Well, I have to say, it made a world of a difference.
That's when I figured I was going to put a 44 tooth sprocket on. You know what happened with that by reading this thread. Stuttering, bucking. Like I said before in this thread, I went back in time on Bikeland and found out the perfect combination for gearing for acceleration and no stuttering. It's what Lee Pritchard (smokin) always had on his 14R for drag racing - 16 front 43 rear.
I messaged my buddy a week ago Friday and told him I went up 1 tooth on the rear sprocket and wanted to see if it made a difference against his bike. I didn't tell him I went down 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket.
We went out for breakfast Saturday morning and then hit the road. 1st try, 40 mph 2nd gear roll on. As soon as we both hit it, my rear tire broke loose and spun so fast it hit the rev limiter. I had to abort the run. I pulled up to my buddy and held up 3 fingers. He then held up 3 fingers. OK, will start in 3rd gear. We took off and when I finally let off I looked in my right mirror to see where he was. He was so far behind me I said to myself did he let off? I'm not kidding. He was at least a block behind me. We stopped at what is called Double Ditch and got off our bikes. He didn't say a word about the race. I finally asked him if he thinks the sprocket I put on helped. I did tell him then that I also went down 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket. He said yeah. That wasn't a race. It was more like a slaughter.
Something else he did. He had siphoned 4 gallons of gas out of his bike before he left his house to make it lighter. I really think he thought it would be a close race.
I just had to tell you about this. What a great combination of gearing for the 14R. I should've done it years ago.

Nice story Mokaw!

I run 17/46 which is close and similar to a 16/43 setup, and it doesn’t exhibit the stuttering issue that has been reported with other setups. The 17/46 and 16/43 has mind blowing acceleration all while maintaining top end speed…..I’m running a 190/55 tire so that helps a bit.

17/46. Sounds like another great combination.
Yes. The acceleration is awesome with 16/43. I was actually getting kind of bored with my bike. Stock gearing forever. Now I always look forward to riding it. Too bad I had to park it for the winter. Living in North Dakota, you never know when a snowstorm will hit. So far so good.

Just thought id stick my head in and nod in agreement with the assessment that the ZX14R is an AMAZING machine! After 45 years of riding on all sorts of makes and models, I'm at the conclusion it's gonna be a difficult endeavor to find a better replacement scoot.

He said yeah. That wasn't a race. It was more like a slaughter.

I really love the Hayabusa. Really, I wouldn't give my Gen2 up. As much as I loved my Gen1 ZX-14, I really felt the extra 2 or 3 tq the busa had down low. Two or three hp at 10,000 rpm, nobody will feel that but 2-3 tq way down low, that's a real difference. My Gen2 Hayabusa wheelied easier than my Gen1 ZX-14. The busa was harder to launch for drag racing though. It's good that the Gen2 14R upped the aunty. I still can't believe Suzuki made the Gen3 Hayabusa a better street bike without bringing the race lineage to a new level. The Gen3 Hayabusa is a gorgeous bike but I'll take a 14R any day. I guess people buy bikes for all different reasons and many don't feel as strongly as I do about performance. I always feel badly for a new Gen3 Hayabusa owner. I wonder if they did their research before dumping the cash. People buy 14Rs cheaper and they're faster. FCOL, I was thinking about it for 12 years and that was the obvious conclusion! Maybe your buddy will pick up a used 14R now. Good to know the race results. I hear the Gen3 busa is very fast up to 65 mph so a race from a dig might be a little more competitive. I'm more interested in what happens over 65 mph though. ...and as far as I know, the Gen3 Hayabusa tops out below 186 mph, at least that's how it appeared from a video I saw. That just makes me sad.

Just thought id stick my head in and nod in agreement with the assessment that the ZX14R is an AMAZING machine!

Thanks DT! It's brought the spirit back to me. I'm glad to have something close to what I'm familiar with but its better!
