LOL I knew it from my truck getting hail damage and the deer leaping into the side of it in the first year of ownership! Still, if I would have been able to make claims for those that might have effected my premium. I'm better off with a few dents. Of course, if injuries are a factor in a crash, insurance is a must. As far as losing the 08 ZX-14, what I saved by having cheap insurance all these years paid for that bike. That's what I was counting on but of course, I hoped to never crash it at all. I would have gotten about 4 grand for that bike after deductibles and I would have paid way more than that for full coverage over fourteen years of ownership. Plus, they might have jacked up my premiums on the other vehicles after making a claim. It's insurance, the house always wins.

Tell that to the insurance companies that had to pay out the claims for Hurricane Katrina, they lost their asses.

I don't know much about it but from a quick google, it seems possible a lot of those claims were denied or only covered partial damages. I can't see an insurance company taking a risk on losing over the longterm. They plan to lose a few and win all of the others. I doubt any of them would set themself up to be bankrupted by a hurricane when they know a hurricane definitely will happen every few years at a coastal area.

Here's one for State Farm, one of the largest insurers in the nation, reported losses of $6.3 billion last year. If you've tried to purchase a homeowners policy lately, they are skyrocketing due to losses.

Why is State Farm losing so much money?
State Farm total revenue last year was $104.2 billion. State Farm said in a release that its unfavorable operating results came from "continued elevated claims severity and significant catastrophe activity," for both auto and homeowners insurance.Feb 29, 2024 State Farm posts net loss of $6.3 billion for 2023 - WGLT

They've been in business for over one hundred years. Three major hurricanes hit the East Coast every year. They didn't just figure this out. It was a calculated risk and they lost like they knew they eventually would and will again. There's a reason for State Farm to insure for hurricanes otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. I'll ask my insurance agent when I get my bike insurance.

Looks, great, of course!

Thanks extrap! Looks HUGE! I like it but it seems a lot bigger than a Gen1. It's 90 lbs heavier than the Gen1, do I have that right??? Gen1 566 wet : Gen2 652 wet. I am able to flatten right down on the tank with plenty of room between my face and the windscreen. I had to sit up on edge of the seat cowl to do that on my Gen1. The top triple tree looks massive compared to the Gen1's too and the seat is gargantuan. The side fairings are definitely wider and I'm pretty sure the handlebars are wider. The Gen2 seat cowl and tail fairings look larger. I think they made the 14R to fit bigger riders. Larger riders (like moi) do ride 14s so I'd say, not a bad way to update the bike. I'm expecting the increased size has put the 14 more decisively in the drag racing and land speed racing department than ever before. I took a lot of weight of my Gen1 and I can really tell sitting on this behemoth.

Kruz, my insurance guy put it like this: All insurance companies have to be backed by some outside entity to ensure that they will be able to pay all claims. Even in the most extreme situations (such as multiple policy holders in a hurricane zone making claims for the value of their home), the insurance company is protected from insolvency by some outside entity. This is the same relationship all US banks have with the FDIC. For example, FIMA (our Federal Government) is the entity that backs insurance companies that provide flood insurance. I’m sure State Farm profits from the sale of flood insurance because when there are no floods, they're not paying out. FIMA protects them from being overwhelmed with the cost of paying claims when they are paying out. An insurance company doesn’t have to provide flood insurance. State Farm doesn’t provide flood insurance in Florida right now. I presume the chances of flooding in Florida are so high that it’s more or less assured State Farm will be relying on FIMA to bail them out before there would be any chance to profit. The 6.1 billion dollar loss of State Farm sounds devastating but as with any business, the market ebbs and flows. Insurance companies know this and are ready to deal with the lean times. Insurance companies are one of the most calculating and lowest risk taking businesses that exist. They have to be because their customers are people who do take risks.

My insurance guy is a sportbike person. He owned an R1 before moving here.

My insurance for my 14R will be $191.80 for 12 months, liability only. This is the about the same that I paid for my 2008 ZX-14. Michigan is a crappy State for auto insurance but that price isn't bad.

191 for a year isn't bad at all. I can't believe with that rate, comp/collision wouldn't be maybe 100-200 more. I'm paying $400/year for full coverage through Progressive right now. A few years ago I was through State Farm as was $300 for FC. But their HO was more so it balanced out that way.

Anyway, I'd run FC if you possibly can on it. At least for the first few years..unfortunately shitty things happen.

I feel the same. I think the price of full coverage was mentioned and it was about $500 if I remember correctly. However, I'd hate to make a claim because I'm so afraid of my rates going up. That could cost me more than the value of a new bike. To me, insurance is ONLY for the very worst situations, the ones I simply can't afford to pay for myself. The value of the bike minus depreciation in one year plus deductible, that's %15 to %20 what I paid for the bike. I do have to sit back and consider the chances I would ever use that full coverage for how often I use the bike.

Well, my thoughts on the matter are no one ever intends to have an accident, that is why we call them "accidents" and not "intentionals" and therefore we never know when we'll have one, thus the need for insurance. The only way I know of to never have a riding accident is never ride. This advice is from someone who has been down more times than I care to remember over my riding career. Just my .02s worth.

There is no better insurance than to not do anything that requires insurance. My big unplanned losses in life were my career and my marriage. There was no insurance for either of those or I damned sure would have taken it before embarking. I knew both were less than a sure thing but with time, maybe I could make them work. Time eventually ran out. As much as I wanted to succeed and as badly as it would suck if I didn’t, I knew I could afford to lose them.

Do the things you can afford to lose and insure yourself for as much as you can afford. However, there is no insurance for the crappiest things in life that will ever happen to you. My life would have been pretty meaningless without the things I did that I wasn’t insured for.

I just spent most of what I had saved. I know it will have great significance in my life. That's what it's really all about, "is this worth doing" or "is it not worth doing?" Insurance is for the times in life where you kind of don't know the answer to those questions.

Got the license plate mounted, switched KTRC to 1 and Power Mode to F. I still don't know if I'm going to do a high rpm break in or not. If I do, I want to ride those first few miles as derestricted as possible.

I still haven't busted the cherry on this brand new 14R! I must admit, I'm a bit intimidated. Well, I worked 58 hours this week and it rained today. I couldn't ride even if I had time to dig out my old Icon helmet that I forsook a decade ago for my Shoie. My Shoie was badly damaged in my crash but I'm hanging onto it for old time's sake. I'm planning to get a RuRoc Atlas Track 4.0 Core Carbon.

With all the work I'm doing, I can afford it. Next week, I might elect to do 28 hours of OT and I'll make more with that alone than I will on my straight time. I might have the money to buy that S1000 RR before to long!!!!

...but it's time to quit being so bashful and jump on top of that 14R and ride her like she's begging to be ridden. Anticipation makes it all the better but it's nothing compared to really doing it! Cross your fingers for good weather in Michigan this week.

Rather took a look at the RSS for this one. So if you leave that bike sitting around lone enough, my buddies will start building homes on it or in it.

I must admit, I'm a bit intimidated.

1352 to a 1441 will grow a smile on the face. Parked the 14 and rode the ST when I got it backup and running for a couple of months. Then swapped bikes one day. Leaving the neighborhood I just opened it up like I was riding the ST. Almost pulled my hands off the grips. we're talking under 30mph.

Thanks, Somefun. As time progresses, my 2024 will have all the tasty goodies too. It might take a while as I'm determined to rebuild that 08 of mine and I had a few tasty goodies on that one too.

LOL Hub, there's plenty of little buddies here with the wooded lot and some of them do take up residence but so far no problem in the garage. They have a nice climate controlled house to live in, why bother with the garage? The new bike will stay in one of my storage units soon. Never had a problem with critters there but I remembered the Borax circle of protection trick you mentioned years back.

You're a Carly Simon fan? She was one of those unusual looking women that managed to be sexier than all the babes that fit the mold. I just realized, Alanis Morissette resembles her a bit and IMO, equally alluring.
